NEWS: ST. VINCENT TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘STRANGE MERCY’

Strange Mercy is the beguiling new album from St. Vincent, set for release on 12 September 2011 via 4AD / Rhythmethod.

Strange Mercy is an unsparing examination of personal catharsis cloaked in some of the most sublime music of Annie Clark’s career, conjuring her impeccably vivid sound-scapes with brilliant producer/engineer John Congleton (Okkervil River, Wye Oak, Explosions in the Sky).

“Many of the songs are about wanting relief from pain, and searching high and low for release,” attests Clark. Such powerful emotions prompted — demanded, really — not just a bracingly candid lyrical style but a new musical approach.

Strange Mercy features very little of the baroque strings, woodwinds, and reeds that marked previous album Actor, and the grooves are sturdy, deep and beguiling. “I tried to keep the arrangements pretty simple and use just enough instrumentation to get the point across”. Consequently, Strange Mercy is a much more guitar-oriented album, filigreed with indelible hook-lines and ingenious rhythm parts.

Strange Mercy is what happens when the very picture of elegance and poise confronts turmoil and grief: You can either gaze in mute despair at those pieces lying on the floor, or you can make something beautiful, even transcendent out of them, but only by confronting yourself.

“Annie Clark, the musician otherwise known as St. Vincent, projects an aura of eerie perfection – beautiful, poised, good-humoured, and well-adjusted to a degree uncommon for rock performers, let alone ordinary people.” Pitchfork

“Her classy, silky vocals, like a prog-pop Judy Garland, are a guiding light through mazes of Of Montreal-ish synth-weirdness and Flaming Lips-esque odysseys.” NME

NEWS: GILL-SCOTT HERON/JAMIE XX MAKE PICHFORK’S ‘OVERLOOKED RECORDS OF 2011′ LIST

Pitchfork have highlighted some of the year’s worthy records you may have missed the first time around.

Among the worthy mentions is Gill-Scott Heron & Jamie xx We’re New Here.

Read the review below:

GIL SCOTT-HERON & JAMIE xx
We’re New Here

In what became his last release before his death in May, We’re New Here found Gil Scott-Heron combining with Jamie Smith, producer and percussionist for London minimalists the xx. Smith, a gifted re-mixer, was tasked by XL Record chief Richard Russell with re-contextualizing and refitting the dimly lit sounds and arrangements of 2010′s I’m New Here, Scott-Heron’s first release in 16 years as well as one on which he sang and spoke over spiny production provided by Russell. Smith approaches his mission by adding what Sean Fennessey calls “brightness, an energy, and a historical milieu” and in effect, transforming Scott-Heron from “broken man into a recombinant diva.” David Bevan [source Pitchfork]

VIDEO: IRON & WINE 4AD SESSION

Iron & Wine released their fourth album, Kiss Each Other Cleanthrough 4AD/Rhythmethod in January 2011.

Somewhat of a departure from earlier recordings and representing an expansion of the ideas explored on last album The Shepherd’s Dog, the record saw Beams often stripped-back compositions development into ornate arrangements. Live performances also saw Beam joined by a cast of musicians, helping flesh out his sound.

For this beautifully rendered 4AD Session, Beam made the conscious decision to return to his roots. Taking those album tracks back to their nascent form, Beam delivers five acoustic performances that immediately make clear the craft and care that constitutes each Iron & Wine track. Pushed to the fore is Beams languorous vocals, showcasing the seemingly effortless ease with which he is able to imbibe his music with a nuanced poetry.

Filmed at Miloco Recording Studios in Bermondsey in March 2011, the location proved truly fitting of the performance. Beam found himself surrounded by an array of vintage analogue equipment, a perfect compliment to the down-home wood-and twine classic songwriting that has continued to characterize the work of Iron & Wine over the course of four albums.

Playing four songs from the new album, long time fans will also note the inclusion of the ‘Upwards Over The Mountain’, a track drawn from the bands much-loved back catalogue.
