Everything Is Recorded – the new collaborative artist project from Richard Russell – today release a new single, ‘Mountains Of Gold’ via XL Recordings. It sees the record producer and XL Recordings head, renowned for his album production work for Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn, Ibeyi and Gil Scott-Heron among others, collaborating with a diverse host of acclaimed artists in the form of London’s very own Sampha (who also lent vocals to Everything Is Recorded’s debut track ‘Close But Not Quite’), French-Cuban duo Ibeyi, NYC rapper WIki and LA jazz titan Kamasi Washington.
“’Mountains of Gold’ is sound system inspired, you can hear a lot of strong and different personalities and voices in the one song, but the feeling is consistent. Everyone has plenty of space” – Richard Russell
‘Mountains Of Gold’ comes accompanied by a Nick Walker-directed video. The video, which was shot in Los Angeles, features, in order of appearance, Kaner Flex, Lisa-Kainde Diaz (Ibeyi), Mela Murder, Naomi Diaz (Ibeyi), Infinite, Sampha, Wiki, Kamasi Washington, Hardy Blechman, Richard Russell and Quincy Jones.
‘Mountains Of Gold’ is the follow up to Everything Is Recorded’s debut ‘Close But Not Quite’ EP, which featured a similarly eclectic host of international artists including Sampha, Giggs, Obongjayar, Tic, Warren Ellis, Infinite, Mela Murder, Green Gartside and Baluji Shrivastav.. Both releases provide a captivating snapshot of the kind of collaboration and experimentation that has taken place at Russell’s west London studio, The Copper House. This studio has become a creative second home for a revolving cast of vocalists and musicians who pass through to write, record and share ideas, mixing traditional recording sessions with extended, uninhibited live jams.
‘Mountains Of Gold’ is available from today on all digital services and on 12” vinyl featuring exclusive B-side ‘Mountains Of Dub feat. Kamasi Washington’. ‘Mountains Of Dub’ also features live mix and outboard effects by Brian Eno, Redlight and Seb Chew.
Look out for more Everything Is Recorded releases in the very near future.
KAMASI WASHINGTON’S HARMONY OF DIFFERENCE Out September 29th on Young Turks / Rhythmethod
“My hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realize the beauty in our own differences.”
— Kamasi Washington
Music titan Kamasi Washington’s new EP Harmony of Difference, the first new music from Washington since his universally acclaimed 2015 debut album The Epic, will be released on September 29th via Young Turks / Rhythmethod.
Harmony of Difference originally premiered as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art 2017 Biennial alongside a film by A.G. Rojas and also featuring artwork by Kamasi Washington’s sister, Amani Washington.
The new music is an original six-part suite that explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.” Beyond the artistic impulse to expand the possibilities within counterpoint, Washington wanted to create something that opened people’s minds to the gift of diversity.
Each of the first five movements is its own unique composition. “Truth,” the sixth movement, fuses all five compositions into one simultaneous performance. Echoing this fusion, Amani created five paintings focused on raw shapes and colours, each inspired by one of the first five movements of the suite. Amani then combined these paintings to create a sixth: an abstract depiction of a human face.
The film, directed by A.G. Rojas, brings the metaphoric ideas found in both the music and paintings to life. While still quite abstract, it focuses on the harmony found in people from South Central and East Los Angeles and shows the beauty in their differences.
Harmony Of Difference will be available on all digital services, as well as on 12” vinyl with a 14-page concertina booklet featuring original artwork by Amani Washington and still images from the film by A.G. Rojas on September 29th. It is available to pre-order via http://y-t-r.co/harmonyofdifference
