Archive for the 'News' CategoryTHE NATIONAL ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF THEIR SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM“TROUBLE WILL FIND ME,” A NEW DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE AT TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL Trouble Will Find Me, The National’s new album will be released on 4AD on May 17th in NZ via 4AD / Rhythmethod.. This is the sixth studio album for the Brooklyn band, and follows 2010’s critical and commercial success High Violet. The album is the most self-assured collection of songs produced by The National in its 14-year career. In an interview with UK’s UNCUT Magazine, front man Matt Berninger described the songs as more “immediate and visceral” than their previous work. Trouble Will Find Me possesses a directness, a coherency and an approachability that suggests The National are at their most confident. After a 22-month tour following the release of High Violet the band returned home. Regardless of plans to wait to record new music for another year or two, guitarist Aaron Dessner began working on sketches of new songs that the other members were too inspired by to not fully realize. Matt confesses, “For the past ten years we’d been chasing something, wanting to prove something. And this chase was about trying to disprove our own insecurities. After touring High Violet, I think we felt like we’d finally gotten there. Now we could relax—not in terms of our own expectations but we didn’t have to prove our identity any longer.” The results are simultaneously breakthrough and oddly familiar, the culmination of an artistic journey that has led The National both to a new crest and, somehow, back to their beginnings—when, says Aaron, “our ideas would immediately click with each other. It’s free-wheeling again. The songs on one level are our most complex, and on another they’re our most simple and human. It just feels like we’ve embraced the chemistry we have.” The album was recorded at Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, NY. Trouble Will Find Me was self-produced and mixed by Craig Silvey with additional mixing from Peter Katis and Marcus Paquin. In advance of the release, the documentary Mistaken For Strangers will premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival as the festival opener on April 17th. The film, directed by Tom Berninger, follows The National on its biggest tour to date. Newbie roadie Tom (lead singer Matt Berninger’s younger brother) is a heavy metal and horror movie enthusiast, and can’t help but put his own spin on the experience. Inevitably, Tom’s moonlighting as an irreverent documentarian creates drama on the road. The film is a touching look at two very different brothers and an entertaining story of artistic aspiration. Following the May 17th release of Trouble Will Find Me, The National will embark on a world tour. Watch this space Kiwi Fans! ABOUT THE NATIONAL http://www.americanmary.com/ |

After reading the script for the film, Adele enlisted Paul Epworth to co-write and produce the theme song to “Skyfall™.” Adele admits, “I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for Skyfall. There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song. But I fell in love with the script and Paul had some great ideas for the track and it ended up being a bit of a no brainer to do it in the end. It was also a lot of fun writing to a brief, something I’ve never done which made it exciting. When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be back combing my hair when I’m 60 telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day I’m sure!” Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, “Skyfall” features the lush accompaniment of a 77-piece orchestra. “Skyfall” is the first recording by Adele since releasing her massively successful sophomore album 21 in early 2011. To date 21 has sold over 24 million albums worldwide and garnered Adele 6 Grammy Awards, 2 BRIT Awards and 2 Ivor Novello Awards. 21 is the biggest selling album of both 2011 and 2012. “Skyfall”, the film, will be released in cinemas on November 22, 2012 in New Zealand.

LOVE THIS GIANT, OUT SEPTEMBER 8th (NZ) ON 4AD/TODO MUNDO

Photo by Andreas Laszlo Konrath David Byrne & St. Vincent have confirmed the September 8th release of their album, Love This Giant, to be released worldwide by 4AD under exclusive license from Byrne’s label Todo Mundo.* Recorded over two years largely at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, the album is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word, with Byrne and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) co-writing ten of the album’s twelve tracks, and each artist penning one song individually. The album centres around an explosive brass band and is propelled by John Congleton’s drum programming. See below for complete tracklisting, and download album opener ‘Who’ at www.lovethisgiant.com Byrne and Clark will launch a 24-date North American tour on September 15 in Minneapolis. “We’ll be doing these songs and a bunch of songs that we suspect people will know, with a group that includes eight brass players, a keyboardist and a drummer,” says Byrne of the tour. “There was no delineating what the roles were,” explains Clark. “It’s a collaboration I’m truly proud of.” The duo also split lyrical and vocal duties on the record, which despite eschewing a traditional guitar/bass/drums line-up in favour of idiosyncratic horn arrangements, presents itself as infectious and modern hook-laden rock. Byrne and Clark met in 2009 at the ‘Dark Was The Night’ benefit at Radio City Music Hall and were approached shortly after by the Housing Works Bookstore to collaborate on a night of music. They began composing remotely, trading song ideas and structures online while Clark toured and it quickly became apparent that they had more than just one night of music in them. Byrne performed with Clark at her ‘American Songbook’ show at Lincoln Center in 2010, and Clark contributed vocals to Byrne’s Here Lies Love album, released the same year. Love This Giant Tracklist: 1. Who 2. Weekend in the Dust 3. Dinner For Two 4. Ice Age 5. I Am An Ape 6. The Forest Awakes 7. I Should Watch TV 8. Lazarus 9. Optimist 10. Lightning 11. The One Who Broke Your Heart (featuring The Dap-Kings and Antibalas) 12. Outside of Space & Time

Archive for the 'News' CategoryDaughter sign to 4ADThe London-based trio of Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella, collectively known as Daughter, has signed to 4AD worldwide, outside of North America. On the strength of just two EPs, ‘His Young Heart’ and ‘The Wild Youth’, Daughter have built for themselves a dedicated following, illustrated by their sold-out show at the 700-capacity Assembly Hall in North London. No mean feat for a band whose current incarnation has been performing together for a mere eighteen months. Commenting on their new career path, Daughter say, “We couldn’t be happier to be working with 4AD, a label that has released so many inspirational records and whose ethos we hold in very high regard. It really is a privilege.” Daughter are working on their debut album.

Archive for the 'News' CategoryNews: DANISH ‘EFTERKLANG’ TO PREMIERE NEW ALBUM IN SYDNEY?!Together for more than a decade, Efterklang have constantly pushed the boundaries of pop experimentalism over the course of three critically acclaimed albums (and some of the best album artwork ever!!). This desire to experiment has informed their approach to performing live, garnering the band plaudits for playing in diverse settings – whether alongside the Danish National Chamber Orchestra or Britten Sinfonia (‘Performing Parades’ tour), or in the company of family members on a remote Danish island (Vincent Moon’s ‘An Island’ documentary). It comes as no surprise then, that Efterklang would look to present new material in a unique setting and on a grand scale. On May 26th 2012, Efterklang will make their debut performance at the prestigious Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony, as part of Sydney Vivid Festival 2012. The Vivid Live event will be a worldwide premiere of the music from the Danes’ forthcoming album Piramida, due for release later this year on 4AD. Working towards their antipodean debut, Efterklang have engaged classical arrangers Missy Mazzoli (Kronos Quartet, Victoire), Karsten Fundal (Under Byen, Oh Land) and Daniel Bjarnason (Sigur Rós, Múm) to help their new songwriting fully integrate with the Sydney Symphony orchestra, conducted by Matthew Coorey. For this special concert, the Danish trio will be performing as a six-piece, augmented by Peter Broderick (piano), Katinka Fogh Vindelev (choir) and Toby Dammit (drums). Efterklang feel Sydney Opera House is the perfect place to mark a new beginning, on the grounds that fellow Dane Jørn Utzon designed nearly sixty years ago. I’m looking at flights now! www.efterklang.net

Archive for the 'News' CategoryNews: TANLINES – AN ALBUM AT LAST!
Mixed Emotions is the debut album from Brooklyn’s Tanlines, the duo of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass). Initially a production project, Tanlines have evolved through two acclaimed EPs into a deeply personal, electronic pop group. The album was recorded in a series of locations after the band were evicted from their own studio, which in turn pushed Emm to focus on his lyrics and songwriting. In the process, he discovered a beautiful baritone vocal style. The lyrics poured out of him, and their maturity and honesty form the core of Mixed Emotions. The result fuses the music of the band’s childhood (New Order, the KLF, Stock Aitken Waterman, Stevie Winwood) with pristine synthetic sounds and their own homespun organic ones. “African percussion, swirling guitars, and dancefloor elements… their style is inspired as much by club music as indie rock, from the Tough Alliance to MPP-era Animal Collective“ Pitchfork Mixed Emotions is out March 19 via True Panther/Rhythmethod.
