PURITY RING ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ANOTHER ETERNITY  – release date February 27th 2015

HEAR ‘Begin Again’:

Often mentioned as a “similar to” artist for NZ’s The Broods, Canadian duo Megan James and Corin Roddick, aka Purity Ring, return with a second album, entitled Another Eternity on February 27th.

Purity Ring’s breakthrough 2012 debut Shrines was in many ways a prescient suggestion of indie and popular music to come. The album earned the #1 spot on iTunes Electronic chart, Pitchfork ‘Best New Music’ laurels and praise from both sides of the Atlantic (New York Times, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, NME).

While Shrines was composed remotely between Halifax and Montreal, Another Eternity marks the first time Megan and Corin were able to create a record in the same room. The pair ventured home to the frozen industrial landscapes of their birthplace Edmonton, Alberta to document much of what would become the album. Megan and Corin recorded and produced their follow-up themselves, as always.

With Another Eternity Purity Ring trade the claustrophobic atmospheres of Shrines for wide-open expanses of sound. Between the brooding anthem ‘begin again’, the infectious ‘bodyache’ and the time-suspending ‘stillness in woe’, the emotional geography of Another Eternity is wider than ever: gloomy valleys and gleaming peaks in equal measure. Megan James’ vocals are in sharper focus as she details her lyrical universe of “sweat and dreams” populated by seacastles, rattling spines and weeping drawers. Corin Roddick’s gift for evocative melody remains intact but his percussive skills and use of space have been refined and honed.

PURITY RING ‘SHRINES’ OUT NOW

“Makes our skin prickle with pleasure.”Time Out
“Eleven strange but simple pleasures.”The Fly 4.5/5
“It doesn’t half get under your skin.”The Sunday Telegraph 4/5

“The past, present and future of the label are all represented on this beautiful record.”
The Times 4/5

This week marks the release of Shrines, the debut album by Canadian duo Purity Ring. Despite the band’s young age (Corin is 21, Megan 24) and short gestation (they formed in late 2010), they have delivered one of 2012’s most assured albums.

The record’s 11 tracks trace a unique aesthetic universe that is carefully crafted and fully realized, deftly walking the lines between trap-rap exhilaration and airy 90s R&B, lush dream pop and the powerful, bone-rattling immediacy of modern hip hop. Megan’s remarkable voice is at once ecstatic and ethereal, soaring joyfully through Corin’s carefully chopped beats, trembling synths, and skewed vocal samples. It’s hardly surprising, then, that Shrines feels like anything but a first record.
