Laneway stars, TYCHO, drop surprise album!

When discussing the surprise element of this release Hansen said, “I’ve never been fond of handing in an album then waiting 4 months for it to be released. I wanted to be more connected to the people consuming the music. There is a kind of visceral fulfillment you get from sharing something that you’ve just created with other people. That’s a very satisfying feeling as an artist” Hansen continues, “All art is in some way shaped by the current state of the world around the person creating it so there’s a element of zeitgeist built into any album. We just finished mastering the album so it will be a month old when people hear it. I’m hoping people get a sense that this music is directly connected to the time they are experiencing it in.”

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – First World Problem

UMO FirstWorldProblems_artbyHenriettaHarris

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shared a new song called “First World Problem,” which was premiered on Annie Mac’s show on BBC Radio 1 moments ago.  The song was recorded in March while the band was on break from touring and is the first new original song to be shared by UMO since the release of the critically acclaimed Multi-Love.

“I think ‘First World Problem’ is about modern love in a crumbling empire,” explains Ruban Nielson. “The feeling that you’re trying to build your life and get what you need while a decadent world falls apart around you.”

Also, UMO was recently featured on the massive Day of the Dead compilation of Grateful Dead covers, a charity compilation benefiting the Red Hot Organization on 4AD / Rhythmethod. They delivered one of the best (and certainly most danceable) tracks, their rendition of “Shakedown Street.”

Ibeyi Release New Track “Exhibit Diaz” (Jay Electronica cover)

Since the release of their debut, self-titled album in February of this year, it has been well documented that the Ibeyi twins Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz are dedicated fans of hip-hop. Today they release their unique interpretation of the cult Jay Electronica track ‘Better In Tune With The Infinite (Bibo No Aozora)’ which they have named ‘Exhibit Diaz‘. Listen to it HERE

Since hearing the original version by Jay Electronica (an unreleased track), that draws upon a haunting piano sample by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the sisters immediately went away and learnt every lyric, then turned Jay’s rapping into a sung vocal line and worked it into their live repoirtoire – where it has remained ever since and has subsequently become a fan favourite.

Shlohmo Signs to True Panther, Releases New Single Today on True Panther

Shlohmo, born Henry Laufer, has announced his signing to influential independent label True Panther. To celebrate, Shlohmo released a brand new track, “Emerge From Smoke,”. Available for purchase on iTunes now, “Emerge From Smoke” will also be released on 7” vinyl with an exclusive track on the b-side via True Panther and Laufer’s own burgeoning artist collective, WeDidIt, with pre-orders here.

Shlohmo’s sound has evolved in ways that are difficult to describe. His unique approach to production seems as steeped in sludge metal as it is in drum & bass, as much IDM as it is R&B. It is somewhere deep within this sonic collage that he has carved out a distinct and celebrated voice in the electronic music space. His production on BANKS’ 2014 single “Brain,” and his sought-after remixes and crossover style, as witnessed in this year’s collaborative release with Jeremih, are further evidence of his immense talent and wide scope of influence.

“Set to do to Manila, what Arcade Fire did to Montreal and Pulp did to Sheffield” ~ Dazed

Eyedress has premiered a brand new track ‘When I’m Gone (feat. GEoRGiA). The first track from his debut album working title ‘Astral Traveling Man’ (due Spring 2015) follows the critically acclaimed mixtape ‘Hearing Colours’ and his debut EP ‘Supernatural’. The song sees the Filipino producer getting some back up for his self proclaimed ‘spacey-assed beats’ from the vocals of hotly tipped Londoner GEoRGiA.

Check it out here:  https://soundcloud.com/eyedress/when-im-gone-feat-georgia

Eyedress is also set to return to European shores imminently for a string of headline shows and a support slot with Mercury Music Prize nominated Jungle. Those who caught his live shows earlier this year were captivated – with NME describing one as “far from the cliché of a bedroom producer as it’s possible to imagine – it’s punk as fuck, weird and utterly compelling”. Full dates below.

Based in Quezon City, Manila, Eyedress is 24 year old Filipino producer, Idris Vicuña. He records music using Fruity Loops in his bedroom on a PC laptop handed down to him by his father. Since his emergence he has supported the likes of Jungle, Grimes and Mac DeMarco and earned plaudits from the likes of I-D, NME The Observer and Dazed & Confused.

FKA twigs – LP1 out now, free tune & her visit with Zane Lowe

FKA twigs by David Burton SML

What the folks overseas are saying….

“FKA Twigs emerges the high priestess of R&B’s latest corruption, and the world will kneel at the altar.”

– The Independent (5/5)

“Confidently frail and hesitant, LP1 is a refreshing reaction to, and a calm assault upon, the unfathomably fast

-paced total noise of the current age.” – Drowned In Sound (9/10)

“Twigs is set on building the sound of the future all by herself.”NME (8/10)

“More than anything this feels universally appealing. You don’t have to be a strict devotee of the R&B underground

genre to realise that this is a great album”The 405 (10/10)

“FKA Twigs is definitely one of the establishing voices in a new generation of artists who are refreshingly human

– They’re just making stuff, and it happens to be really good.”The Thousands

“Clarity is shunned for something more confounding, more intoxicating.” DIY Mag (4/5)

“FKA Twigs is an empress of subtlety, a connoisseur of the barely tangible moments between pop music’s

satiating exhalations. The big reveals in her songs tend to hit with half the force of usual radio fare,

yet they leave impressions that only grow more pronounced with time.”Pitchfork

“Fragile, heavenly and utterly compelling; this debut paves the way for boundaries-pushing pop.

This is music that shatters you with a single tap.”Clash (8/10)

LP1, the highly-anticipated debut album from FKA twigs, is out now

via Young Turks / Rhythmethod.

LP1 is FKA twigs’ defining artistic statement, building on the success of her two previous EPs and

accompanying videos (EP1 and EP2) which have elevated FKA twigs from a word-of-mouth secret to

global obsession over the past two years. LP1 features none of these previously released songs;

instead each track on LP1 is brand new, born out of FKA twigs’ artistic philosophy of spontaneous creation

and collaboration in the studio.

The Datsuns announce ‘Deep Sleep’

DATSUNS 2014 LOGO small

revel in 1970s cult film super-villains for

new album, Deep Sleep.

The Datsuns announce the forthcoming release of their new album Deep Sleep on Friday October 3rd and share first track, Caught in The Silver on their website www.thedatsuns.com

Seizing the opportunity of being in the same city, Deep Sleep was written and recorded in a blistering fast ten days at Roundhead Studios in Auckland last summer. The result is a sonic explosion that arrives, lights the place on fire, then leaves, all within the space of 34 minutes.

Singer/bassist Dolf de Borst explains, “We’re not fucking around. We’re all conscious of the fact that we don’t live close to each other and we’re getting older and people have families, so, if we’re together, we’re going to make records.”

Deep Sleep elaborates on their signature breakneck-paced rock’n’roll delving into more menacing terrain summoned from the bands collective proto-metal 70s influences; Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult and Bloodrock, to name a few. Semi-tones are thrown in amongst blues scale riffs creating a darker, more evil sound that summons images of 1970s cult film super-villains.

While the band made Deep Sleep they collectively took an interest in 1970s French comic Kris Kool created by cult psychedelic artist Caza (Philippe Cazaumayou). Inspired and enamoured by his artwork while in the studio, the band contacted Caza direct, now 72 years old, and licensed an image for the front cover of Deep Sleep, complementing the darker 70s vibe The Datsuns were playing with.
