Tim Darcy, best known as the guitarist and vocalist for the Canadian rock band, Ought, will release his debut, solo album, Saturday Night, on February 17th via Jagjaguwar.

Following the release of debut single, “Tall Glass of Water,” Darcy now presents another standout number, “Still Waking Up,” in which a Smiths-esque melody builds upon an underbrush that recalls 60s AM pop and country. “Here and elsewhere, Darcy casts himself as an astute alt.rock classicist, crafting songs whose wit and verve prevents them from feeling too indebted to their inspirations” (Uncut). Directed by Meg Remy of U.S. Girls, the accompanying video for “Still Waking Up” perfect captures the romance of the song as Darcy croons about the realization of a lost love, “You are a flashing light, something about the way you blink your eyes tells me that you’re not ready, tells me that you’re still waking up alone with too many years left to plan.”

Darcy’s unmistakable, commanding voice and lyrical phrasing are vital to the entirety of Saturday Night. Throughout, he over-enunciates. He makes mantras out of molehills. He whoops and croons, all the while, he presents an evident softness and an accompanying musicality. While there are moments that take their strength in sparseness, Darcy is unafraid to paint in economic technicolor as his wry lyricism floats nimbly upon chorused guitars and the occasional synthetic artifact.
