Commentary, Video: Deerhunter smack me up the side of my head!

Deerhunter, whose album has just landed in New Zealand – out on Monday Sep 27! – have just whacked me in the head.
Like many female music lovers I know (not all FML’s do this – I just know a few in my circle) when I first hear a song I tend to focus on the melody, the sway, the mood of it…. and then come round to the lyrics and the story down the track of familiarity. Sometimes revealing quite a different tone to the original perception which can be a real surprise…
So for the last week I’ve been floating on the clouds of the gorgeous song ‘Helicopter’ by Deerhunter. Dreamy, swaying and swirling as it is..and the lyrics simple and sung in Bradford’s silken tone all was feeling good.
Then I was fossiking about their website for gems for you and read this…
The Story Of Helicopter

and yeah… well…THWACK.
ok. Reeling.

Oh and you can click through to watch the video that Bradford devised too….

News & Stream :Glasser Debut album "Ring" out now and streaming in full

“Pitched somewhere between High Places and Arthur Russell, Panda Bear and Bjork”
Fact

Glasser’s stunning debut album Ring is out now via True Panther / Matador / Rhythmethod.

Glasser is the one-woman orchestra of Los Angeles based Cameron Mesirow. Ring was recorded with producer Ariel Rechtschaid, who helped re-imagine her musical arrangements, incorporating organic instrumentation including strings, woodwinds, bass, and a wide array of percussion into her once-sparse recordings. Mesirow’s simple, minimal melodies and rapturous vocals are perfectly complimented by the album’s maximalist arrangements.

Ring moves like the wake of a small boat in a still lake; each song its own, but leading to, and becoming, the next. In doing so it builds on the tradition of classic albums like Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, and R. Kelly’s Trapped In the Closet – albums that as a whole create stories that are bigger than the sum of their individual songs.
Glasser entered public consciousness in 2009 with her debut EP Apply, released on True Panther, and a UK-only 12” released on the Young Turks label. The intimate, luxurious music resonated widely. Mesirow’s EPs and live shows earned her attention from producers Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid (who also co-produced a few tracks and the transitions on Ring), and tour supports for The XX, Jonsi, and Delorean.

“Clear-voiced folk to layered tracks with an intercontinental/intergalactic edge…an intersection of pop, deconstructed beats, and ethereal noise.”
LA Times
“These are beautiful songs, both sweet and abstract, deeply felt and anodyne.”
New York Times
“This synth siren sounds like a weirder and more credible version of Enya, all ethereal vocals and meandering melodies.”
Guardian UK
“Dreamy momentum via overlapping percussion, vocals, synthesizers, electronics, and a feel that’s both tropical and frozen.”
Stereogum
“Heavy breaths, tribal percussion, children’s lullabies, ambient clouds, and ghostly echoes all bubble to the surface right on time.”

Broken Records – news album, free MP3

October 25th 2010 will see the New Zealand release of Let Me Come Home, the new studio album by Scotland’s Broken Records.

The follow-up to 2009′s debut Until The Earth Begins To Part, Let Me Come Home started out as a series of sketches and song fragments in frontman Jamie Sutherland’s kitchen, later taking form in demo sessions at an old distillery grain store in the Highlands. Recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) at his COD Studio in Glasgow with artwork conceived by Vaughan Oliver at v23, Let Me Come Home will be released on CD, LP and digital formats.

Speaking about the inspiration behind their second album, Jamie Sutherland says:

“An idea started to form about the direction of the new record based on several films and albums that I became gradually obsessed with at that time. Watching the widescreen emptiness of films Badlands, Rumble Fish and East of Eden, as well as records such as Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads, Calexico’s Feast of Wire and REM’s early back catalogue all became a strong influence on the direction of the new songs. It was also during this time that the lyrical theme of the record started to take shape, thinking about what was going on around me in the form of fears and concerns over making relationships work, and a need for security.”

Opening album track, ‘A Leaving Song’ is also available to download as a free MP3 from www.4ad.com/news/announce-new-alb-1/

‘A Darkness Rises Up’ will be released as a single on October 18th
