Emo-punk duo Carb on Carb released their sophomore album for ages last May to great international review. The album continues to give – today they share visuals for ‘Annual Leave‘ a confronting, yet inspiring track about the all-consuming rat race. The video premiered on Spincoaster last night in support of their upcoming Japan tour.
Filmed mostly in the beautiful surroundings of Northland, New Zealand, Carb on Carb swap out suburban backgrounds for scenic views. They transport between serene farmland, lush forests and orchards… all the places we’d rather be! “All the things you wanted to be buried under a 40-hour week” lead vocalist Nicole Gaffney sings of lost time and the desire to break free from alienating labour. Watch the video for ‘Annual Leave’ below.
Tomorrow night, Friday, May 3rd, Carb on Carb will play a release show at Whammy Bar, Auckland, marking a year since the release of their second LP, for ages. Support from Auckland’s finest; indie-rock gem Being., looping genius, Ana Te K?tiro and shoegaze band Blush Juliet performing their debut show.

Carb On Carb released their sophomore album, for ages, last May, a heart-on-sleeve record inspiring an emotive-punk revival Aotearoa needs! The album received sparkling reviews worldwide, being praised for its “emotive resilience” (The Soundcheck). Standout track ‘Man Says’ was added to Spotify’s New Music Friday the week of the album’s release.
First single It’s Been a Rough Year was added to Spotify editorial playlists Local Noise, Women of AU and NZ and more, as well as rotation on community and student radio throughout Australia, NZ and the US. The track’s summery vibe blended with alternative guitar lines make for a feel-good anthem, with belting lyrics “resilient, you’ve got this right” attesting to the individual power to overcome life’s challenges. Weirdo Wasteland summed up the track, “Carb on Carb have weaved this raw emotionality into a resolute anthem…this is the kind of song that’s important to have these days. Listen to it and tell me it doesn’t make you feel a little bit better about life as it is for you currently.”
