Washington-based vocalist and songwriter Marti today shares her new single ‘Mothers & Fathers’. The single and accompanying video are available to buy and stream on all platforms via b4.

On ‘Mothers & Fathers’, Marti imagines a utopia for her chosen family. “This song and video are about the freedom of youth. The freedom to simply exist,” Marti explains. “We often find ourselves in a complex or “forbidden” love as one of our first experiences of romance, with all the desire to rebel and pressure to conform. I wanted to paint that story here.” Born of a desire to create a film that celebrates black joy without using race as the central theme, the ‘Mothers & Fathers’ video presents an Americana teenage dream summer starring Marti and her friends. “Our blackness is a huge piece of who we are in the diaspora,” she explains. “But we are multidimensional beings and we do not have to center that in every piece of it just because society has. It’s okay to just “be” no matter what that “be” may actually be.”

‘Mothers & Fathers’ follows the release of Marti’s most recent single ‘Lust’. Released through Onlyfans, the single and video served as a celebration of sex workers and a defiant statement on their rights and freedoms. Revenue from tips on the video was distributed between two DC-based sex worker rights organisations. Described by i-D Magazine as “a seductive, enrapturing slow burn of a song about fantasy fulfilment and secret-sharing” the single established Marti as one of R&B’s most exciting new voices.

After spending her early twenties travelling the world as a model and ingratiating herself into local music and art scenes, Marti became a fixture in downtown NYC and DC nightlife. Her captivating performances led to collaborations with artists including Duckwrth, Kojey Radical and Dev Hynes who invited her to guest on his acclaimed 2018 Blood Orange record ‘Negro Swan’. Now, with the innovative release of her debut single, Marti is setting the tone for her rise as one of 2020’s most exciting new voices.
