The stunning new album from Dylan Leblanc is out this week via Rough Trade/ Rhythmethod
Dylan describes what the song is about: “I had a crazy dream and this was the theme music to it. In my dream I was walking through the forest, and there was a battle going on and everyone was shooting each other and then people were hanging out and smoking cigarettes with their rifles and I remember there was a beautiful woman in the dream with long black hair. She was like a painting, and every time she turned the corner, the rest of the world would also become a painting. Every time I wanted to go closer, she would round the next corner. I woke up and I said “I have to write that song”. I picked it out on my guitar and I started thinking about innocence and what age is it that innocence stops and you start to become more aware of the world. When you become wise, things aren’t as fun and good as they used to be. It takes the magic out of it.”
A native of Muscle Shoals, Alabama – and part of the growing music scene there (Alabama Shakes, Secret Sisters, Civil Wars etc) Twenty-one year old Dylan was practically raised in the legendary Fame Studios where his dad was a regular player, and where people like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Etta James and countless others recorded. Fame’s head, Rick Hall, signed Dylan to its publishing arm as soon as he was legally of age to do so – eighteen. Part of the deal was that Dylan got access to the studio, where he recorded both his debut album Paupers Field (2010) and the bulk of the forthcoming follow-up Cast The Same Old Shadow which was then completed in New Orleans.
Co-produced by Dylan and Grammy award-winning engineer Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris), the album has a highly adventurous, cinematic feel.
Other than writing and recording this album, since the release of Paupers Field, Dylan LeBlanc has shared stages with friends First Aid Kit, Warpaint, Laura Marling, Drive By Truckers, and Lucinda Williams. He has also been hand-picked to play with Bruce Springsteen at London’s Hyde Park this July as part of the Hard Rock Calling Festival where he will be joined by special guest BJ Cole on steel pedal.
