MRCY have today announced details of new single ‘Angels’, which is available now on Dead Oceans. ‘Angels’ is the first preview of more new music from MRCY set to follow their acclaimed inaugural project, VOLUME 1, next year.
‘Angels’ is a stunningly-realized harmony of floor-filling Soul and Gospel, both in conversation with the greats (Curtis Mayfield, SAULT, Marvin Gaye, Khruangbin) but already bearing that clear MRCY stamp; good people, coming together over quality music. Its contemplative but uplifting lyrics are likewise emblematic of MRCY’s common viewpoint, having faith that the best days lie on the other side of hard times. The band describe ‘Angels’ as “trusting that the universe will be on your side, provided you go for what you want. It’s also in part about being someone that can be counted on.”

MRCY – ‘Angels’
Having released their first ever single in February, ‘Angels’ makes apparent why MRCY have quickly become one of the most talked-about new acts around – in part, by being unafraid to stand out. Barney and Kojo connected on Instagram during the intensity of the pandemic, drawing on their similarities and differences: Barney, for instance, was born amidst Huddersfield’s melting-pot soundsystem culture, and has established himself as one of the UK’s most respected young producers behind the scenes (with Mercury and Ivor-nominated artists ranging from Olivia Dean to Obongjayar). Kojo, meanwhile, earned his stripes in a South London church as well as singing Bvs with equally-illustrious homegrown artists Cleo Sol, Little Simz and Jungle. MRCY wrote one of the their first singles, ‘R.L.M’, on their first meeting in the studio, with VOLUME 1 exploring the guys’ universal but highly individual experiences of love, loss, and the spirit of compassion or m(e)rcy that you long to see more of in the world.
Continuing with ‘Angels’, MRCY have quickly captivated audiences with songs that are as feel-good and timeless in spirit as they are totally of today. Also playing their first ever live shows earlier this year, the group have already opened for Black Pumas around Europe and the UK, stormed the festival season – All Points East, Great Escape, Green Man, End of the Road – and picked up support across Radio 1, 6Music and Apple Music (including Zane Lowe, Elton John and Guy Garvey shout-outs). At the heart of the band is the opposites-attract chemistry of Barney and Kojo themselves, two hugely distinct and multi-talented personalities with the confidence to step out of the shadows and show a little MRCY.
