Fontaines D.C. today release a music video for ‘Bug’, taken from their acclaimed fourth album ROMANCE and directed by celebrated Academy-Award®-winner Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank, Cow). The stunning video is a short form reimagination of Arnold’s lauded forthcoming film Bird and includes unseen footage exclusive to the ‘Bug’ video. Released theatrically in the UK and US this Friday 8th November via distributor, streaming service and production company MUBI, Bird features remarkable performances from Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Franz Rogowski (Passages), and newcomer Nykiya Adams as the latest in the filmmaker’s canon of indelible heroines alongside newcomer Jason Buda. Bird also sees Fontaines D.C.’s own Carlos O’Connell making his big screen debut while Fontaines D.C.’s music feature prominently in the film’s soundtrack.

Speaking about the ‘Bug’ video, Andrea Arnold says:

“I’ve loved the Fontaine’s since I first heard them. Some music just sits in your bones like it always belonged, like you know it already, like it’s part of you. It’s why I asked to use ‘Too Real’ and ‘A Hero’s Death’ for my Bird film.  Their music felt like it belonged there. In my world.  They were immediately generous in letting me use those tracks which was just fucking brilliant.  That generosity brought energy which gets poured into the life of the film. I am grateful for all the positive energy that comes when you make a film.   Extending the images and my Bird world for the Bug track felt like the most natural thing in the world. Like part of the same thing. I wouldn’t have done it had I not felt that. And I would hardly do it for anyone”

While Carlos O’Connell adds:

“Andrea Arnold was kind enough to cut up a sequence to our tune Bug featuring Barry Keoghan playing the character Bug in her new movie Bird.

Bug’s a song that happened quickly and convinced everyone quicker.

In my eyes, the character Bug, the tattoo “Bug’s Life”, Andrea’s essential & romantic worlds, and the line ‘Changed my name to “Promise you, Yea”’; when put all together make convincing needless & conviction undeniable.

Big thanks to Andrea Arnold for letting us in so close to her visionary universe. She’ll be remembered how we remember Bacon or Goya.”

‘Bug’ is the latest in a line of world-building videos from the Dublin band. In April they released the bombastic first track from the new album, ‘Starburster’ to international acclaim, with the song declared the best of 2024 so far by Rolling Stone and Consequence. It was released alongside the much-talked about music video from Aube Perrie, a conceptual world that continues to reveal itself across an unfolding metaverse. The follow-up single and shimmering album finalé ‘Favourite’ was accompanied by a beautiful self-directed video while for ‘Here’s The Thing’ and ‘In The Modern World’, the band collaborated with hotly-tipped filmmaker Luna Carmoon (Hoard, Shagbands).

ROMANCE is Fontaines D.C.’s biggest album to date. Released via XL Recordings on 23 August, the James Ford-produced record has been met with an incredible response from fans and critics alike. More than doubling the first week sales of their acclaimed 2022 release Skinty Fia, ROMANCE received a host of five-star plaudits from the likes of NME, The Guardian and Rolling Stone UK while songwriting legend Elton John recently declared that they’re “the best band out there at the moment”. The 11-track masterpiece presents a bold leap forward for the band, weaving together ideas that have been percolating among Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan (bass), and Tom Coll (drums) since their acclaimed 2022 release, Skinty Fia. With its innovative sound and captivating artistry, ROMANCE cements Fontaines D.C.’s status as “the defining band of their generation” (NME).
