Music icon and national treasure Mavis Staples has been nominated for two GRAMMY’s for performances on her new album Sad And Beautiful World, which was released last week.
Her renditions of the Kevin Morby song ‘Beautiful Strangers’ (Best American Roots Performance) and Frank Ocean’s ‘Godspeed’ (Best Americana Performance) were both nominated.
“For a world stricken by injustice, uncertainty and loneliness, Staples has again delivered a soundtrack that meets the moment,” Associated Press has declared. Rolling Stone added: “The album further cements Staples alongside Bettye Lavette and Willie Nelson in the pantheon of great American song interpreters still doing great work later in life.”
On Monday of this week, Staples gave a moving performance of ‘Human Mind’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a track co-written for Mavis by Hozier and Allison Russell. Watch it below.

Produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee) Sad And Beautiful World shows that love is a choice and a force all its own. The album is a litany of prayer, of Mavis breathing life into these songs. “I just have to deliver the compassion I feel,” she says. “I want to share the song the way I feel it.”
