Introducing… SUPERFAN a new signing for label AD 93

Superfan is the songwriting veil of Kali Priya Flanagan, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and producer. Initially imagined as a solo act, ambitious string arrangements crafted in collaboration with cellist Omeed Almassi have come to define Superfan’s noisy and magnetic pop soundscape.

Superfan shares their new single ‘Picture Of Return’ via new label home AD 93 (Joanne Robertson, Dagmar Zuniga, YHWH Nailgun). Kali says “the song is a reflection on emotional manipulation – falling into a trap built by someone else’s projections and desires that oppose your own. There’s a sadness in knowing that sometimes the only agency you can have is hoping that it’ll pass.

In addition to the visualiser, Superfan presents the live version filmed inside Agger Fish Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard by Garrett Winston. More to come from Superfan.

Superfan – ‘Picture Of Return’ (Live)

Kali began studying music at age four and writing songs at age eleven, signing his first record deal at age fourteen while refining his singular musicality across guitar, piano, drums, bass, upright, and violin. Last year, he released the singles Apeiron (Fantasy Football)’ and ‘Miss W Jones

Before Superfan, Flanagan found success during the pandemic under his first moniker, “KALI.” His initial releases garnered millions of streams and led to collaborations with seasoned high-profile producers and industry teams. Despite his budding career as an indie-pop star, Flanagan was dissatisfied with the conditions of his artistic output and community as he reached adulthood. His coming-of-age years in Los Angeles were marked by an ever-present new-wave pop music oblivion: “hits” made in 5-hour sessions with strangers, a social life suffocated by others’ aspirations for fame, and an absent audience for live music that pushed past the prescriptions of recorded music.

Since moving to Brooklyn three years ago, Flanagan has emerged as an integral member of the new cello renaissance, with one foot in experimentation and the other in singer-songwriterdom. His signature guitar tone, brooding voice, and knack for impactful live arrangement have led to co-writing/production, covers, and live performance cameos for the likes of Operelly, Jordan Patterson, and Quiet Light. In addition to having opened up for The Strokes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, via direct invitation from superfan Julian Casablancas, Superfan has played shows with Quiet Light, Knifeplay, Kath Bloom, Horsegirl, Userband, Samba Jean-Baptiste, Zoh Amba, PARKiNG, Brittle Brian (of @), Tiberius B, Autobahn, untitled (halo), voyeur, Birdfeeder, Racing Mount Pleasant and countless other tastemakers.

Flanagan and Almassi now extend the Acousticello arrangement into other artists’ live performances and recordings. Kali is also a primary member of the New York-based Midwest emo band Holidays in the United States, touring frequently and contributing as both a songwriter and a bassist. In addition to his musicianship, Kali attends Hunter College as a part-time student, studying German and Creative Writing, as well as freelancing for the artistic resource site The Creative Independent.
