Overmono return to release ‘Knight in Shining Prada’, the third and final preview of their highly-anticipated second album, Pure Devotion (releasing 7 August via XL Recordings). A collaboration with cult British poet John Joseph Holt, it is a song born from loss and transformed into something transcendent. It follows the recently released ‘Even Angels Ghost’ and ‘Lockup’, and arrives alongside a cinematic visual that sees Overmono and Rollo Jackson deepen the Pure Devotion visual world into its third chapter. Watch it now below.

Overmono – Knight In Shining Prada (feat. John Joseph Holt)

‘Knight In Shining Prada’ is the centrepiece of Pure Devotion. It began as a voice note from John, who recorded it walking his dog near his home in The Fens, words arriving the way they do when no one is watching. Overmono paired it with a chord sequence written on a Prophet analogue synthesiser during a writing retreat in Spain, and something locked into place immediately. In writing the lyrics, John had thought about Tom and Ed’s relationship as brothers, drawing on memories of his own late brother. In his words, John says, “My brother Thomas Edward Holt had an incredibly adventurous soul that inspired everyone around him. He was a carpenter, a photographer – an artist in the truest sense. He took his own life on January 10th, 2017, aged 31. To make something so positive out of something so crushing is the greatest gift. May this song remind people of loved ones they have lost and bring them closer to their hearts. If we play it loud enough, do you think they will hear us in heaven?”

“As soon as he sent it to us, it all just felt so perfectly familiar,” Ed says. “It was one of those ones where we’re sat in the studio, and the hair is standing up on our arms.” What followed was 83 versions, the brothers chiselling away until every element of the track felt worthy of what John had given them. “He’s got such an incredible way with words,” Tom says of John’s contribution, “it’s deeply personal to him, but there’s something that’s so free-flowing and natural about it.”

What started as a radical reimagining of Overmono’s live show in 2024 evolved into a phenomenon – from headlining Glastonbury’s West Holts to selling out London’s Alexandra Palace and curating Manchester’s Warehouse Project. As Pure Devotion grew onstage in front of tens of thousands of people, its core ideas deepened and crystallised via isolated writing and recording retreats to Spain and Iceland with nothing but two synths and an FX unit, channeling the momentum into the most life-affirming and groundbreaking music of their career. Across the 11 tracks, Overmono have adopted experimental production techniques that involve synthesisers from the 70s and 80s, an antiquated train announcement speaker, and literally baking a crash cymbal in the oven. There’s a powerful sense of intention and physicality embedded in every choice, which extends to Holt’s emotive vocal on this single, close collaborator Kindora, and Paul Institute’s Ruthven. It’s an album that chooses emotion over desensitisation. Craft over efficiency. It’s a labour of love. Pure Devotion.
