Buoyed by recent success with ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ and ‘Haunted’, the laconic ‘Scarlet’ is all raindrop pianos, and FM static; subtle runs chiming like morning bells. Of the subject matter, front woman Angeline Armstrong says “This song is about those sudden (often unexpected) floods of helplessness that hit us from time to time. Call it anxiety, panic, loneliness, depression, just plain old sad…trapped and stuck in your own head and crying out for an escape. Craving that ‘dignity’ to be restored to you, to be ‘dressed in scarlet’ (not those 24hr PJs) and carried away ‘beyond horizons where the skyline turns to dust’. Longing for the days when the sad ones are well behind you.”

Arriving just ahead of the full EP, the track is a live favourite and offers a further look at the widescreen pop music of Stained Glass Love, cinematic in scope and ambitious in design. Despite the sweeping sonics and muffled club beats offering escapism of the higher-order, Armstrong’s enchanting lyrics are drenched in real-world pain, private universes nestled within the sleek musical beds.

Listen to Scarlet:

The tracks on Stained Glass Love delve into self-destruction, heartbreak, addiction, desire, anxiety, isolation, and – eventually – rebirth. There’s a coming-of-age narrative weaved through the entire tapestry, and a mature restraint to the production, deftly handled by multi-instrumentalists Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty.

Upon release, preceding track ‘Haunted’ was heralded by tastemakers around the country with a first play on triple j Drive w/ Hobba & Hing, swiftly followed by a full add alongside triple j Unearthed and Double J completing the trifecta. The group also graced the cover of Spotify’s Alt Here and Apple Music’s Heaps Indie. First single ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ saw Telenova soar to new heights with a full addition at triple j and a hoard of  support from specialist radio across the country. The band lended themselves for the covers of Spotify’s Front Left, The Local List and Broad Chords, as well as a clean sweep of AUNZ + Asian NMFs and most recently an addition to Breaking Hits. Apple Music crowned the band as one of their Up Next artists in May with adds to global playlist Heaps Indie, New Music Daily, indie + chill and more.

Praise for Telenova

“I’m running out of compliments for Telenova!” – Declan Byrne, triple j

“Telenova have proven they know their way around a spellbinding chorus” – Double J

“Telenova are breaking through the noise and making a splash…” – NOTION

“It’s rare for a band to arrive with such a polished and defined aesthetic this early” – NME, ★★★★

“Telenova have made an impact pretty quickly.” – Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“This is stupidly good. A sophisticated and utterly mesmerizing second release from one of 2021’s best new acts” – Bridget Hustwaite, triple j (Tranquilize)

“‘Cinematic indie pop at its finest. It sounds at once nostalgic while thoroughly modern, and is sure to get stuck in your head from the very first listen.” – Purple Sneakers

“A majestic debut from a band in its infancy… Telenova’s universe is so well realised you’ll be leaving footsteps in the band’s saturated deserts the moment you step through their portal” – NME, ★★★★

“This song really did take me by surprise when I heard it for the first time on Friday and I thought YES, kicking off next week’s BREAKING with this….” – Matt Wilkinson, Apple Music 1 (Tranquilize)

“…the trio bring together a lifetime of musical experience condensed into genre-combining brilliance, where their overlapping worlds come together to create striking moments of hazy alt-electronic-R&B-esque versatility.” – Pilerats

Telenova – Stained Glass Love is out Friday 19 August via Pointer Recordings / Remote Control Records.
