DANIELLE PONDER releases new album Everything Has Changed

Danielle Ponder, the Rochester-born, Atlanta-rooted singer-songwriter with one of the most commanding voices in music, has released her sophomore album, Everything Has Changed, today via Dead Oceans. It’s her label debut, released in partnership with Phoebe Bridgers and was produced by Grammy Award winner Mike Elizondo and Barney Lister with additional contributions from Bartees Strange and Avis Reese. Alongside the release, she shares a video for ‘Open Windows,’ one of the most devastating moments on the record.

Shot back home at Rochester’s George Eastman House, the estate of Kodak founder George Eastman and now a National Historic Landmark dedicated to film and photograph preservation, the video accompanies a song built around the fear that follows a significant loss. ‘Open Windows’ captures the panic of wondering whether love will ever return: “This love didn’t make me / This love didn’t save me / But oh how it breaks me.” Ponder explains, “When someone you love leaves, it can make you believe no one will ever fill that space, but a friend once reminded me that I hadn’t yet met all the people who would love me. ‘Open Windows’ begins in a place of hopelessness, but the openness in the song makes room for new beginnings. I wrote it with my friend Declan Gaffney in London, and as soon as I heard the music, I knew it belonged on this album. The strings, the musical flip, it captures so much of who I am as an artist, sitting comfortably somewhere between classic and the future.”

The song caps an emotional arc across the album that runs through lead single ‘Power,’ a celebration of Black resilience and diaspora born from a trip Ponder took to Dakar, Senegal at 17; ‘Sun and Moon,’ an upbeat meditation on a love that only shows up when you’re walking away; and ‘God of You,’ a towering blues ballad inspired in part by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put a Spell on You.’ Together, these songs reveal the album’s deeper purpose. Everything Has Changed isn’t simply about grief or heartbreak. It’s about dismantling the stories Ponder once told herself and finding peace in what remains.

ABOUT DANIELLE PONDER

Danielle Ponder is done waiting for a future version of herself to arrive. Now, the Rochester-born, Atlanta-rooted singer-songwriter is unapologetically living in the moment. This realization powers Everything Has Changed, Ponder’s anticipated sophomore album (and debut on Dead Oceans in partnership with Phoebe Bridgers).

The LP is Ponder’s most self-assured statement to date: it was crafted through a period of immense transformation as the beloved vocalist propelled from being a lawyer to a full-fledged musical powerhouse. That artistic freedom threads the album, as heard on lead single, “Power”, which serves as both a declaration and an affirmation for the Black diaspora. Other highlights include the revelatory “Sun and Moon”, the towering blues ballad “God of You”, and the devastatingly vulnerable “Open Windows”.

Everything Has Changed dismantles the stories Ponder once told herself and finds peace in what remains—all themes that have shaped much of her journey.

Music was always a constant presence throughout her life, but practicality initially took over in adulthood. While performing with her family’s band and later developing her own projects, Ponder pursued a legal career focused on criminal justice reform. It wasn’t until her late 30s that she allowed herself to seriously imagine music as more than a side pursuit. In 2021, at age 39, she finally took the leap, leaving law behind to pursue her artistry full-time.

The gamble paid off: she signed her first record deal in 2022, becoming a trailblazer on her own unusual path to worldwide renown. Her debut album Some of Us Are Brave introduced Ponder as one of soul music’s most compelling new voices, thanks to singles like “Someone Like You”, “Roll The Credits,” and the empowering title track. The LP earned critical acclaim along with dozens of major sync placements, including the latest Apple campaign for the iPhone 16 Pro. She’s since had four major TV appearances, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! Ponder has also sold out shows across North America and Europe, including festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Afropunk, and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

But if that album documented her arrival, Everything Has Changed documents her evolution.
