Midnight Sister, the shapeshifting, multi-disciplinary duo of Los Angeles artists Juliana Giraffe and Ari Balouzian, are methodically proving why they’re your new favorite LA pop freaks – even if you don’t know it yet.

The come dancing out the womb on new single ‘Foxes,’ — snearing street tough vocals; loping, resplendent glam; and a capital S Strut that’ll turn every head in the room. This is a MOVIE. On January 15, the two will release their sophomore record, Painting The Roses, on Jagjaguwar.

On ‘Foxes’, Giraffe demonstrates the depth of her vocal range, spanning multiple different characters all in conversation with one another. Balouzian fills ‘Foxes’ out with an uplifting arrangement featuring strings, horns, and highlighted by electric guitar that would even make George Harrison gently weep.

Giraffe had this to say about ‘Foxes’:

“The song and video explore the relationship between performer and performance. Dissecting what it means to feel trapped by someone’s/something’s gaze and how the inherent invasive nature of the camera corners the performer through a dance of reality.”

Both Giraffe and Balouzian bring their own unique talents and practices to Midnight Sister. Giraffe is a designer who regularly constructs the costumes not only for the group’s videos, as seen in “Doctor Says”, but also independently for other artists and campaigns. For his part, Balouzian was responsible for scoring the recent documentary Feels Good Man, a tale exploring the transformation of Pepe the Frog from a college joke to a far-right icon, and is also part of the LA group Gabriels.

But in Midnight Sister, Giraffe and Balouzian combine to create a two-piece cinematic orchestra synthesizing the past, present and future in a colorful and whimsical vision all of their own.
