On 21 July 2003, an 18-year-old Dizzee Rascal released his debut album Boy In Da Corner via XL Recordings. Little did he know that the 15-track album would go on to win the Mercury-Prize, become the first-ever Platinum-selling UK Rap album released, and lay the foundation for Grime.

XL Recordings will mark the 20th Anniversary of Dizzee Rascal’s seminal debut album Boy In Da Corner with the release of a two-volume deluxe edition that features 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks, alongside the original album.

Produced by Tom Lunt, 512 embraces traditional pop, folk, and gospel styles more directly in a collection of four standard tunes, along with a free improvisation and a side long fantasia on a gospel standard. Making a departure from the free-wheeling soliloquies of Eggelston’s debut Musik (2017), which he also produced, Lunt invited musicians Sam Amidon and Leo Abrahams to collaborate on 512. This is what led to Brian Eno performing bells on “Improvisation,” the elegant introduction to 512’s piano-driven palette. It is gentle yet thrilling; guided by Eggleston’s serene piano and Eno’s subtle percussion, “Improvisation” evokes an off-the-cuff alchemy, stretching in unexpected ways across its 3 minutes.

512 was produced in one day in 2018 in Memphis, and is named after the room in which Eggleston sat down to record. Per his lifelong tradition, many of the tracks on 512 feature Eggleston’s take on beloved American songs, including “Ol’ Man River,” “Over the Rainbow,” and “Onward Christian Soldiers.” The resulting 512 is a sparse, stark work of an American icon holding a mirror to the music that has shaped his country, and in turn, himself. “I’ve never heard anything like it,” Eggleston said, grinning. “It’s very modern.”

Alongside Eno on today’s “Improvisation,” 512 also features contributions from Amidon (fiddle/banjo), Matana Robers (saxophone), Abrahams (organ/synthesizer/electric guitar), Mikele Montolli (bass), and Seb Rockford (drums). 512 was mastered by Michal Kupicz, and features six new compositions and improvisations performed by Eggeleston on the piano.

Not many heroes of indie folk have won an Oscar or created the basis of a successful stage musical, but Glen Hansard is an artist who can wear both of those feathers in his cap. As a member of the Frames and the Swell Season, Hansard won acclaim for his literate, intelligent, and passionate songwriting and his nuanced vocals, and he’s gone on to win similar accolades as a solo artist.

Hansard first gained an audience for the limber but emphatic indie rock he created as a member of the Frames, then gained international fame with fellow singer and songwriter Markéta Irglová in the duo the Swell Season, whose emotionally open, primarily acoustic indie folk became the centerpiece of the award-winning independent romantic drama Once. After going out on his own with his 2012 solo debut, Rhythm and Repose, Hansard has shown a stylistic diversity as he embraced the sound of ‘70s singer/songwriters on 2015’s Didn’t He Ramble, vintage soul on 2018’s Between Two Shores, and an eclectic swing between subtle folk and noisy indie rock on 2019’s This Wild Willing.

Glen Hansard now presents All That Was East Is West Of Me Now, his first solo album in 5 years. The album demonstrates the Oscar-win-ning singer-songwriter’s unique ability to blend Irish folk with modern rock & the punch of his storied live shows, of which The Guardian says, “Hansard’s powerful voice, whether raw with passion or tender with regret, shines above arrangements bursting with swagger.”

Grayson Gilmour has announced a brand new album, Holding Patterns — his first full-length release in over six years, is due out on the 3rd November 2023 via Flying Nun Records and will be available digitally, and on a range of limited edition coloured vinyl; red, blue, yellow or black.

Grayson Gilmour is an award-winning song writer, film score composer and performer. He has toured internationally as both a solo artist, and part of the post-punk outfit So So Modern, releasing works on labels all around the world. Following his previous albums No Constellation (2010), Infinite Life! (2014),and Otherness (2017), the upcoming Holding Patterns album is Grayson Gilmour’s fourth full-length release with New Zealand indie label Flying Nun Records.

Curious to work with different instrumentation, Grayson Gilmour ensured that there is practically no guitar on Holding Patterns. Any conventional piano or key parts were eventually rearranged into winds, strings or “weird synth textures”. Consequently, Holding Patterns is the artist’s most collaborative album to date. Improvisation was encouraged in most of the recording sessions with collaborators – the instrumental ‘Holding Patterns’ was actually completely improvised and re-assembled in the studio. Furthermore, the more people he invited into the album; the more enjoyable it became – which perhaps explains why there are so many contributors.

Holding Patterns is out today – 3rd November 2023 via Flying Nun Records and will be available digitally, and on a range of limited edition coloured vinyl; red, blue, yellow or black.

‘The Twits’ was recorded by the trio over eight weeks from February 2023 in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca, and was mixed by Marta Salogni. It finds bar italia’s economical yet evocative songcraft taking raucous, mystic, unkempt, occasionally sinister, and wholly committed turns. Songs like “my little tony”, with its in-the-red riff and excitable hooks, the cathartic four-on-the-floor of ‘world’s greatest emoter’ and the festival tent psychedelia of “Hi-fiver” need little in the way of exposition – these are exhilarating rock songs, if wayward and strange.

Other moments see the band’s increasingly signature, three-act mini-dramas moving into previously uncharted territory. Cristante, Fehmi and Fenton can each manifest a different melody, mood, and cadence – at times overlapping and linear, at others unexpectedly divergent – often within the space of thirty seconds, a tag team rooted in shared language and kinship. “Jelsy”, for instance, plays out like a conversation between friends over wistful, buzzing country blues, the alternating voices at points comforting, wry and hopelessly yearning. The sinuous, slow-burning waltz of “twist” stands out in its bare lyricism and seems to invite each band member’s individual take on a confessional.
