Ryley Walker announces his signing to AD 93 with the release of his first new material since 2021’s Course in Fable. Capturing a sonic shift inspired by computer musicians whose influence loomed large in the American noise underground of his early career, new single ‘Carrier’ is released today alongside a video by Kendra Calhoun.
Of the single, Ryley says:
“‘Carrier’ is a simple tune. Just digital distortion in PPOOLL/Max/MSP and a pitched-down loop of a failed guitar demo from my phone. Ditched years earlier. Totally broken, but refried and refurbished.
I chipped away at it in my apartment downtown NYC after closing shifts at my service-industry gig. Clock-out jams. Great period of exhaustion.
Despite how brutal it sounds, it truly felt like the easier, softer way of making a tune.
I was thinking of people in my hometown of Rockford, Illinois. Wearing SpongeBob pyjama pants to a funeral-type heads. I imagined them screaming behind the wheel of a salvage-title Honda Civic with a lift kit.
They inspire me every day.
I thought of Loren Connors. Thought of Kevin Drumm. Thought of Caspar Brötzmann. Smoked cigs inside.”

Ryley Walker is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Rockford IL, newly relocated to Los Angeles after nine years in New York City. After emerging from the 2000’s Chicago noise scene, he released a string of albums combining his own intricate acoustic guitar stylings with restless stylistic excursions into psych-folk songwriter intimacies (2015’s Primrose Green, 2016’s Golden Sings That Have Been Sung), masterful full-band prog composition (2021’s Course in Fable), and free improv experimentalism (collaborations with Charles Rumback, Steve Gunn, Chris Corsano, David Grubbs, and countless others). His records have appeared on labels including Dead Oceans, Drag City, Thrill Jockey, and his own Husky Pants Recordings. In addition to recording and performing his own music, he plays guitar for james K and occasionally with Joanne Robertson.
