Sleater-Kinney share, ‘The Center Won’t Hold,‘ the title track from their forthcoming highly anticipated new album out August 16 via Milk! Records / Rhythmethod

‘The Center Won’t Hold’ is the third track to be revealed from the upcoming record, produced by St. Vincent, and hailed by The FADER as “one of the most furious, dynamic records of their career.” Billboard recently declared, “Sleater-Kinney are embracing new sounds and influences — a very in-character move for a group that’s never been afraid to challenge expectations.”

‘The Center Won’t Hold’ opens the new album, setting its intense and explosive musical and thematical tones.   The song’s initial slow, forbidding tempo and powerful opening lines, “I need something pretty to help me ease my pain, I need something ugly to put me in my place,” are followed by chant-like layered vocals repeating “the center won’t hold,” all culminating in a frenetic, thunderous climax.

Corin Tucker (guitar/vocals), explains the personal and political overtones; “’The Center Won’t Hold’ drops you into the world of catastrophe that touches on the election. And almost like a mission statement, at the end of that song, it’s like the band is finding its way out of that space by becoming a rock band.”Carrie Brownstein (guitar/vocals) expands on the creative process behind the album stating, “Instead of just going into the studio to document what we’d done, we were going in to explore and to find the essence of something. To dig in deeper. It felt like a really crucial part of the process itself, not just the end game.”

‘The Center Won’t Hold,’ follows the release of ‘Hurry On Home,’ and The Future Is Here,’ which were both received with wide critical acclaim, and described as “mesmerizing” (Consequence of Sound) “a work of sardonic feminism” (Stereogum), a “knockout” (Pitchfork) and “glorious” (Vogue).
