Fresh off the celebrated release of their greatest hits collection Everything Hits At Once: The Best Of Spoon, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors have shared an early demo version of their classic 2014 song ‘Inside Out’, now available on digital services for the first time ever.

‘Inside Out’ is one of the 13 tracks tracing the band’s singular trajectory on Everything Hits At Once: The Best Of Spoon, which also includes new single ‘No Bullet’s Spent’. The song was recently selected as one of the 200 Best Songs of the 2010’s by Pitchfork and Stereogum, respectively, with the former describing it as “quite possibly the lushest Spoon song ever written (…) The greatness of ‘Inside Out’ lies not just in its unexpected softness, but in Daniel’s ability to be wise and brash at the same time. Earned wisdom is a part of getting older; rarely does it sound this accomplished.”

Speaking recently to Entertainment Weekly about the stories behind their biggest hits, Britt Daniel noted of the song: “I wrote that on piano. It was just the chords and a melody, and I remember singing it for my girlfriend and at the time and she was not impressed. I was like “Are you kidding me? I know this is fucking great! And then it kind of just existed as this piano vocal song for a long time. I knew something was good about it but we were making I Want Your Soul and I didn’t want to have just a vocal and piano song on there, it felt we had done that too much already. So we put a beat to it that was sort of stolen from this Dr. Dre song. Then we used that kick-snare pattern and Alex [Fischel, keyboards and guitar] came up with the idea of a harp sound on a keyboard. Then it sounded like something we’d never done before.”
