SOAK COVERS THE NATIONAL’S ‘BLOODBUZZ OHIO’

SOAK—aka Derry, Ireland’s Bridie Monds-Watson—today released her tender solo rendition of The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” from their 2010 LP High Violet. “Bloodbuzz Ohio” is SOAK’s second cover this year, following her take on Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl.” “Matt Berninger is one of my favourite lyricists,” says Monds-Watson. “There’s something so special about the imagery The National manages to create within their music and I often catch myself imagining each song as its own movie trailer.”

THE NATIONAL RELEASE JUICY SONIC MAGIC MINI-DOCUMENTARY VIA AMERICANMARY.COM

Today, The National has released Juicy Sonic Magic via Americanmary.com, a 10-minute mini-documentary in conjunction with their Black Friday Record Store Release of the three-cassette box set entitled The National: Juicy Sonic Magic, Live in Berkeley, September 24-25, 2018. Directed by David DuBois, the film tells the story of late, great concert taper Mike “The Mike” Millard and an homage to his work that was undertaken by archivist and producer Erik Flannigan, who attempted to recreate the legendary taper’s methods by using the same vintage cassette deck and microphones Millard employed in the ’70s to record The National at two Greek Theatre concerts last year.  Watch the minidoc HERE and find a record store near you at recordstoreday.com.

Millard became a legend for his high-quality bootleg recordings of artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan and many others made in and around Southern California in the ’70s and ’80’s by sneaking his equipment into concerts hidden in a wheelchair. The film features animation by illustrator Jess Rotter and Eben McCue, plus interviews with Matt Berninger (lead singer of The National), producer/archivist Erik Flannigan and Mike Millard’s friend Jim Reinstein, who pushed Millard and his wheelchair into dozens of shows.

The National have confirmed today that ultra-cool folk singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers will be joining them for their 2020 Auckland show dates: ASB Theatre – Aotea Centre, Auckland: Friday, 3 April and Saturday, 4 April.

The Los Angeles based Bridgers released her debut album Stranger In The Alps in 2017 to international acclaim “Phoebe Bridgers demonstrates that it’s possible to sing languid, pretty songs while maintaining an air of nervy darkness.”  NPR, Top 10 Albums of 2017.

Over the last year, Bridgers has continued with a prolific release schedule; teaming up with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to release an EP as the indie rock supergroup boygenius. Bridgers, an intimate voice and shy guitar with a folkier bedroom softness; Baker, enormous emo minor tones and a voice that could blow down a building; Dacus, vocals that are clear and confrontational and a guitar shrouded in fuzz. When performed together, it yields an effective kind of magic.” – Pitchfork
