Since the release of their debut, self-titled album in February of this year, it has been well documented that the Ibeyi twins Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz are dedicated fans of hip-hop. Today they release their unique interpretation of the cult Jay Electronica track ‘Better In Tune With The Infinite (Bibo No Aozora)’ which they have named ‘Exhibit Diaz‘. Listen to it HERE

Since hearing the original version by Jay Electronica (an unreleased track), that draws upon a haunting piano sample by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the sisters immediately went away and learnt every lyric, then turned Jay’s rapping into a sung vocal line and worked it into their live repoirtoire – where it has remained ever since and has subsequently become a fan favourite.

‘Exhibit Diaz’ was produced by Richard Russell at his Residence La Revolution studio in London, July 2015.

IbeyiExhibitDiazNaomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz are daughters of the late Cuban percussion Anga Diaz. Naomi plays percussive instruments, the Cajon and the Batas, while Lisa plays piano. Together the twins have learned the songs of their father’s culture, Yoruba.

Yoruba travelled from West Africa to Cuba with slavery in the 1700s. The Yoruba people have the highest twinning rate in the World, and twins occupy an important position within Yoruba culture. Ibeyi is pronounced “ee-bey-ee” and translates as “Twins” in Yoruba.
