In December Rough Trade released the collaborative album by Emiliana Torrini & The Colorist Orchestra, a live album containing nine Emiliana Torrini songs from her catalog along with two brand new songs, one of which is “When We Dance”. Remixer Dan Carey has worked with Emiliana for many years since first producing her ‘Fisherman’s Woman’ Album in 2005, he has also worked as writer, producer, writer or remixer with artists as diverse as Kylie Minogue, Franz Ferdinand, Sia, Hot Chip, Tame Impala, Bats For Lashes, Nick Mulvey and Kate Tempest amongst many others.

Emiliana describes the unique circumstances behind the song’s origin, “We had two days to write a song before the booked studio time. We were in the Belgian countryside staying in an old barn, in the middle of a raging electric storm that lasted days. It was scary and exciting, the song was born in this thick humid electric air. So lyrically I left it there. When my son and I were dancing before the writing trip he said ‘mummy when we dance together our mind shines’. I loved that so much that I kept it as the sentence the whole song would evolve around. I also kept the wrong grammar as that kept my son’s innocent voice in the song.”

Seeing Emilíana and The Colorist Orchestra in concert is a truly special experience. They have a musical chemistry that is undeniable, and documenting the experience on an album was something that just had to be done.

“Ms. Torrini’s voice is warm and whispery and appealingly unpredictable: she knows when to flatten the melody with a half spoke phrase and when to carry it up and away.”
