Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson reworks brother Kody Nielson, aka Silicon’s song “Cellphone”;

Four Nominations for Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards confirmed

When it comes to the brothers Nielson, their music is often a family affair. Starting off together in New Zealand as bandmates in the Flying Nun band The Mint Chicks, Ruban and Kody Nielson continue to work together to this day. As the co-writer for Unknown Mortal Orchestra‘s APRA Silver Scroll-winning song (and stand-out from this year critically acclaimed album of the same name) “Multi-Love,” Kody Nielson also writes and releases music under the name SILICON (whose excellent debut album was released earlier this fall on Weird World/Domino). The brothers decided earlier this year that they would each take a stab at one of the other’s songs, so today, we’re sharing Ruban’s rework of SILICON’s song “Cellphone,” featuring Ruban’s vocals and added instrumentation. Stay tuned for SILICON’s take on a UMO song. If you think really hard, we bet you can guess which song it will be. Here’s what Ruban had to say about his brother and their collaboration.

“My brother was an important part of the recording process of Multi-Love, especially with the drums and keyboards. Kody’s Silicon album, God Emoji extends a lot of the tones and ideas we put into Multi-Love so I think you’ll enjoy it a lot.”

Perhaps news that is just as big and exciting as the brotherly collaboration is the announcement of the 2015 NZ Music Awards nominations. Confirmed last evening, Unknown Mortal Orchestra are finalists in four categories: Album of the YearSingle of the Year for “Multi-Love”, Best Male Solo Artist and Best Alternative Album.  The awards will be held on Thursday 19 November at Auckland’s Vector Arena.
