The keenly awaited new album Playmates by Jack Ladder and the Dreamlanders – out now – on Self Portrait via Rhythmethod distribution in New Zealand.

2014s Playmates was produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, mixed by David Wrench (Jungle, FKA Twigs, Caribou, Seekae) and mastered by Mandy Parnell (The xx, The Knife).

The Dreamlanders (Kirin J. Callinan, Laurence Pike, Donny Benet) reunited to play on the album, and Sharon Van Etten contributes vocals to two tracks.

Playmates is Jack Ladder’s fourth album, two of his previous (2008’s Love Is Gone and 2011’s HURTSVILLE) were both shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize.

The first single from Playmates “Come On Back This Way” showcases a newfound lightness, weaving a glistening synth melody with a chorus duet and wordless backing from breath-taking Brooklyn based artist Sharon Van Etten. Stereogum writes that the song by the “surrealist crooner… sets Ladder’s haunting baritone against jaunty karaoke-lounge synth sounds. It’s an eerie song in its own right, but Alex Smith’s video lifts it to Lynchian heights.” Watch the video for “Come On Back This Way”

2015 is set to be an important year for the Australian band internationally with the announcement that Playmates will be released by legendary label Fat Possum in North America, South America and Japan. The Mississippi based label made its name initially by unearthing lost bluesmen like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, but has moved onto considerable success with contemporary artists such as The Black Keys, Iggy Pop, Spiritualized, Temples as well as loving reissue campaigns of the likes of Al Green and Townes Van Zandt. Also announced this week is that Jack Ladder had signed with renowned agency Paradigm for North America. Kevin French from Paradigm was moved to add him to his roster after seeing his packed set at Bigsound in September. Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders join an impressive list of acts that French books including The National, Tame Impala and The Decembrists.

Playmates is out Friday 7th November on Self Portrait via Rhythmethod distribution in New Zealand.
