Tahitian/Parisian 5-piece outfit 15 15 (FKA QuinzeQuinze – the code’s still the same, but now has a thousand ways to be pronounced) have announced their new EP ATAHEVA, out November 3rd via XL Recordings / Remote Control.
The 5- piece are making music like no one else, conjuring up epic soundscapes coated in Moombahton and club-ready jaunts of the underground that’s been lauded by Crack, Dazed, Pitchfork, Resident Advisor, NPR, and received a personal invitation by Benji B to his prestigious Maida Vale ‘End Of Year Special’, alongside George Riley, Liv.e and Ojerime.
The monstrous shapeshifters keep pushing the boundaries of their expansive electronic-tinged music with new single ‘Perfect Heaven’ – which delicately merges sweet melodies with dark, grumbling basslines and sputtering r&b beats – the song depicts what the band calls “the landscape of a marvellous nightmare”. The accompanying visual is “in our mythology, Ataheva is represented by a swarm of flies, the cloud of mourning, the one that flies over and lands on the decomposing bodies weaving the funeral dress. It is the first observer and the last companion of the passage to death”
Their EP ATAHEVA is an extension of this but also steps into newer, bolder, terrain – both musically and thematically. “ATAHEVA means the cloud of mourning in Tahitian,” they say. ATAHEVA is also an imaginary ritual from the band’s own mythology. “It recalls the Polynesian funeral rite known as Heva Tupapa’u (weeping for the corpse),” they say. “This is a ceremony in which a member of the family of the deceased puts on a very singular costume as the chief mourner (heva). This imposing costume covers the whole body of the person, producing an effect of magnificence but at the same time evoked fear and horror.”

The multidisciplinary collective turned music act 15 15 produces « climatic », colourful and insular music, carried by the Tahitian heritage of two members of the group. By bringing together ancestral ōrero (Polynesian oratory art), traditional percussive instruments (to’ere, steel drum), South American and Caribbean influences (candombe, calypso), and futuristic electronic productions, 15 15 gives life to a singular and timeless narrative style.
