Earlier this month, 300SkullsAndCounting and Jenny Sparks announced their signing to XL Recordings with the single and music video ‘The Ballad of St Nick’s Park’ (“Absurdist screamo meets bassline house, lairy rap and seagull noises” – The Guardian).
The unlikely collaborative duo return to surprise-drop their debut album THIS IS SPA TOWN! digitally through XL Recordings. Across nine tracks, 300SkullsAndCounting’s screamo vocals, 8-bit roots and baroque toy-keyboard melodies collide with Jenny Sparks’ bouncy, bassline-driven production – an infectious sound that sits somewhere between a rave, a mosh pit and the internet.
The pair met by chance in a living room in Stratford, London. While 300Skulls performed fingerboard tricks and Jenny whacked a light off the ceiling, their friendship became cemented by the idea of working together on a bassline remix of 300Skull’s song ‘Eagle vs. Sheagle’. From this point forward, the album’s origins were set in motion. For the next 8 months, 300Skulls travelled to London from Warwickshire almost every weekend, bringing lyrics, melodies and ideas inspired by an abrupt move back in with his parents. During the week, while 300Skulls worked at a local college, Jenny was stuck to a spinny chair in his self-made studio shed, mastering low-end bass design and causing irreparable damage to his ears and gums (mega sourz addiction).
Rather than a traditional vocalist/producer pairing, this is a genuine meeting of both artists’ instrumental, melodic, and songwriting instincts. That push and pull is central to the sound of this album, where neither artist simply sits on top of the other’s production; instead, it’s a true meshing of worlds. From shouting out crushes and local legends to discussing alleged UFO sightings, the songs touch on a range of shared ideas bred from the pair’s upbringing in and around their respective spa towns.

Rooted in the UK DIY emo scene, with strong ties to the NYC-based ‘Sex Emo’-adjacent scene, 300SkullsAndCounting blends screamo, breakcore and chiptune with flashes of sassy hip-hop, and electroclash. Their sound is matched by an intensely physical and ever-evolving live performance, made consistent by the use of a pink karaoke microphone.
Jenny Sparks is a bassline producer from London who has spent the last six years developing his sound from a series of DIY studios, including an old hospital hearing-test room, a One Stop Shop in Bethnal Green opposite Tesco’s, and a shed in the back garden of an ex-care home in Stratford. His productions are playful, unpredictable and built for movement, drawing from the elastic rhythms and low-end pressure of bassline while constantly pushing into stranger territory.
