After establishing their dreamwave sound across their 2025 self-titled debut album, Echomatica return with ‘Atomic Girl’ – a bass-led track wrapped in hazy chromatic dream pop. The song takes its cues from the old cultural fantasies of 1960s B-movie science fiction, with its rose-tinted visions of technology, progress and a better future.
For vocalist Charlie MacLean, the song’s nostalgia isn’t really about the past. “The nostalgic vibes of the song are more about the idea that the future was going to be better than the present,” she says. “That’s a pretty powerful idea to lose, and one young people today are experiencing more than ever.”
The lyrics turn that idea into a character: the ‘Atomic Girl’ has been promised a perfect future, but it isn’t necessarily the one she was sold. The song plays with the clean lines and optimism of the Atomic Age while looking at what was left underneath it. The accompanying video draws from the strange, low-budget world of 1970s Italian science fiction, repurposing clips from Alfonso Brescia’s 1977 film Anno zero – Guerra nello spazio (Year Zero – War in Space).

The track marks the first Echomatica release to feature live drums. Grammy-nominated engineer Scott Seabright recorded the track at Auckland’s The Lab, with production from Greg Haver.
Echomatica released their self-titled debut album in 2025. Singles including ‘Love Isn’t Always’, ‘Something’ and ‘Month of Sundays’ found support across Aotearoa’s student and alternative radio, with ‘Love Isn’t Always’ reaching No. 1 on the 95bFM Top 10 and ‘Month of Sundays’ topping the RadioScope Alternative Airplay Chart. Their music has also received radio play in the US, UK, Australia and Europe.
