Detroit-based singer and producer John FM has announced the release of a new single titled “White Science”, featuring fellow Detroit artist ZelooperZ. It’s the first piece of new music since the release of his critically-lauded EP American Spirit, which exemplifies the unique, dismantled Hi-Tech Soul music that John FM has globally become known for. This coincides with a series of headline performances in Europe, stripping back to John and a piano. Pitchfork has exclaimed of his work: “the music is big enough to fill a club, intimate enough to leave you reeling,” so you won’t want to miss him live. Listen to “White Science” here, which John FM explains is about: “a high school puppy love gone south after her parents found out I was black.”
While John FM has been an active part of the Detroit underground music scene for the best part of the last decade, it’s his recent EP American Spirit and his appearance on AceMo’s underground dance anthem “Where They At???” that has elevated his name into the zeitgeist. Rolling Stone recently included “Where They At???” at #28 on their “200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time” and
the New York Times mentioned the song in a guide to the dance music on Beyonce’s Renaissance. While John has lent his vocals to fellow pioneers and producers like Omar S and Black Noi$e, it’s his recent solo work that has put his own musical narrative at the forefront, and the result continues to captivate audiences.
