Folk Bitch Trio — the Melbourne/Naarm-based band of Gracie Sinclair (she/her), Jeanie Pilkington (she/her) and Heide Peverelle (they/them) – released their debut album, Now Would Be A Good Time, on July 25th via Jagjaguwar.
Melbourne trio Folk Bitch Trio have made a striking debut with Now Would Be a Good Time, an album already hailed as one of the year’s most emotionally resonant. NME awarded it ★★★★★, calling it “a stunning portrait of girlhood, queer love and heartbreak,” and praising the group’s harmonies that “rise with tension, then collapse into near silence.”

Still Listening Magazine described it as “a tender, quietly elegant debut” and “a masterclass in songwriting, harmony and restraint.” Even more restrained takes, like Under the Radar, acknowledged the record’s lyrical power, singling out lines like “Can’t deny it my body keeps the score.” Meanwhile, The AUREVIEW gave it 4½ stars, calling it “pure magic and beautiful brilliance,” and Spill Magazine praised the “incredible harmonies” and “intricate songwriting.”
Produced on tape in Auckland by Tom Healy, the album’s warm, minimalist sound lets the trio’s voices shine. The Australian praised its “lyrical thorniness” and “warm, flowing signature,” confirming Now Would Be a Good Time as a debut that lingers long after the final note.
‘Hotel TV’ follows last month’s ‘Moth Song,’ described by Stereogum as “lush” and hailed by Hearing Things as “a gorgeous soundscape.” In keeping with Now Would Be A Good Time’s chronicling of the brutally familiar moments at the end of relationships, ‘Hotel TV’ is a hypnotic, late-night reverie about “having a sex dream about somebody else while next to your partner, and your partner being a liar,” explains Pilkington. At the song’s conclusion Pilkington sings: “Cause I lay beside him / In the night / And I had a filthy dream / To the noise of the hotel TV.”
