Big Thief’s brand-new record Double Infinity has landed via 4AD, with a real splash, clocking an 85/100 on Metacritic and already being hailed as one of their finest. UK magazine Record Collector went straight in with a perfect 100, raving that “Los Angeles and Double Infinity evoke the stream-of-consciousness brilliance of R.E.M.’s E-Bow the Letter, while Happy With You finds blissed-out rapture in repetition…” (Record Collector via Metacritic).
Over at Uncut, the reviewer described the album as “uplifting and open-hearted, looking backwards and forwards without blame or trepidation” with a healthy 90/100 (Uncut via Metacritic). And Paste Magazine (83) captured the mood perfectly, noting that “Big Thief’s fearlessness into the unknown makes this album all the better” (Paste).
Across the Atlantic, the response has been just as glowing. Rolling Stone gave Double Infinity an 80, praising the breadth of it: “The finished product is just nine songs, but the band covers a ton of ground…” (Rolling Stone via Metacritic). Even the more reserved voices are still on board. Slant Magazine came in lowest with a 70/100, saying that “Double Infinity’s arrangements lamentably don’t match the rawness of Lenker’s lyrics” (Slant via Metacritic), but acknowledged the band’s core strength remains intact.
Taken together, it’s a resounding chorus of approval: Double Infinity is being celebrated as bold, heartfelt, and adventurous — the sound of Big Thief stepping forward, without losing the intimacy that fans treasure.
