1000 Rabbits return with ‘Stupid Boy’, their first new music since the release of their debut EP Are We Friends Yet? earlier this year. Out now via Young (Sampha, The xx, Robyn), the single premiered via Huw Stephens 6Music Radio show and arrives today with a music video directed by Cuan Roche.
‘Stupid Boy’ is another cinematic epic from the five-piece, carrying listeners through a wide sweep of emotion. It begins tight, delicate and melodic before erupting into a bold embrace of freedom. Grounded by a playful bass synthesiser, River’s expressive vocal lines weave through a colourful tapestry of violin, guitar and drums. The accompanying video mirrors the song’s otherworldly melodies, following the band’s daily life through the lens of a fish tank and growing more abstract as the track builds towards its release. It is the latest chapter in the band’s rhythm-forward, emotionally raw world, one that asks you to ditch your self-consciousness and move.
“This summer we’ve had a wild time in Europe and the UK playing at festivals and touring our EP. The song became a space to experiment with lots of facets of our performance – singing all together, getting into the crowd, dancing and shouting: things we’d never done before but that the song demanded. It’s cathartic, and sharing that feeling with an audience and seeing it resonate has been magical. It’s one of our wildest, angriest, most cathartic experiments so far, and we are proud of its volatile constitution – it could explode at any moment.”

1000 Rabbits are an off-kilter art-pop picnic, telling stories through human sounds that are both intimate and extroverted. Comprising Laura (violin/viola), Liv (synthesiser), Paolo (guitar), River (vocals) and Luke (drums), the band have performed across London’s independent venues, becoming regulars at The Windmill in Brixton, where their enigmatic, high-voltage performances earned them a word-of-mouth reputation as local “powerhouses”.
Earlier this year, the band released Are We Friends Yet?, a six-track EP capturing their first two years in motion. Featuring the singles ‘Virgin Soil’ and ‘Rubik’s Cube’, the EP arrived digitally and on 12″. Its title comes from a defining moment in their live show: a question posed by River during ‘Spring Cleaning’, the closing track of both the record and every set they play. It’s a moment that captures the warmth and vulnerability at the heart of the band.
