Naarm/Melbourne trio Acopia return with their new single ‘Real Life’, the third glimpse into their upcoming full-length Blush Response, set for release September 12 via independent label Scenic Route.
Following acclaimed singles ‘Talk About It’ and ‘Falter’ — which drew praise from Stereogum, The Face, Resident Advisor, CLASH, Crack, DMY, The Face, PAPER, Under The Radar and The Line of Best Fit — ‘Real Life’ finds Acopia deepening their exploration of emotional intensity and sonic restraint.
Written around a looping arpeggiated motif, the track came to life in a rooftop studio tucked inside a mostly abandoned office building in South Yarra. It’s a meditation on obsessive love, emotional fatigue, and the inertia of patterns we can’t quite break, anchored by the lyrical refrain: “Wasting my days / Watch it grow old / Back to default”. Softly hypnotic and sharply self-aware, ‘Real Life’ distills Acopia’s ability to blend atmosphere with intimacy, their signature sound somewhere between dream-pop, downtempo, and post-punk minimalism.
Acopia – ‘Real Life’
Their forthcoming album Blush Response is a reflective, emotionally articulate collection. Across its eight tracks, Acopia explore the weight of unresolved feelings, communication breakdowns, and the tension between fragility and resilience. It’s a record shaped as much by stillness as it is by sound, quiet yet cutting.
Formed in 2018 by Kate Durman, Lachlan McGeehan, and Morgan Wright, Acopia began with a bare-bones ethos: sparse, slow, and stripped back. Over the years, they’ve evolved into a more fluid, instinct-driven project: open to mood, texture, and unexpected vulnerability.
Their debut Chances (2022) introduced their quiet intensity; 2023’s self-titled follow-up earned critical acclaim for its emotional depth and sonic subtlety. Pitchfork described it as “a nod to 1980s ennui and 2020s anxiety.” Acopia’s live sets, understated yet deeply affecting, have taken them from support slots with Tirzah and Bar Italia to major appearances at Golden Plains, Rising, and NTS Naarm, culminating in a sold-out headline show at London’s Lexington.
With Blush Response, Acopia move into a new chapter: more forthright, more assured, and emotionally clearer than ever.
