Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collaborator; Ásgeir shares a hypnotic new single “Unbound” taken from his highly anticipated second album, Afterglow out this May 5th on Inertia via Rhythmethod. A glittering menagerie of chirping electronic melodies and stop-start beats, the song came about in a last minute studio session, evolving from a singular, inspiring lyric: “nothing holds me back now”.
“Unbound” is a stunning, yearning piece of music and the first offering of new music since Ásgeir’s stand out debut album In The Silence. The album leaves behind the folk-tinged acoustics of In The Silence and dives head first into melancholic, melodic electronica in its purest form. All the while continuing with the spell-binding elements he has come to be known by, and collaborating once again with his father, renowned Icelandic poet, Einar Georg on the lyrics for Afterglow. Ásgeir’s brothers and long-time musical collaborators Thorsteinn, Julius Robertsson and Hogni also feature on the record.
Talking about Afterglow, Ásgeir says: “I feel like I have achieved plenty already with this album, gotten to know myself better, feel I’ve grown a lot. Not just because of the album, but it has definitely helped.”
Ásgeir couldn’t have predicted the immensity of his success off the back of 2014 debut album, In the Silence – coming from the Icelandic town of Laugarbakki, populated by just 40 people, Ásgeir is every bit as introverted, humble and unassuming as he is gifted. The same year, Ásgeir sold out two shows at the Sydney Opera House, was immediate Feature Album at triple j and made his debut Splendour in the Grass appearance. The Icelandic version of the album, Dyrd í dauðathogn, became the fastest selling debut from a home grown artist in Iceland, with one in 10 people in Iceland owning the album, breaking all previous records and outselling Bjork and Sigur Rós.
