Bing & Ruth – Divergence: Species Remixes EP
Bing & Ruth has announced Divergence: Species Remixes, a companion work to Species, the group’s latest studio album. Digitally released on 30 October, Divergence features reworkings of Species tracks by like-minded artists Khotin, Lucy Gooch, Maria Somerville, James Krivchenia and Nailah Hunter. Today, Bing & Ruth release Khotin’s remix of ‘Badwater Psalm’. Khotin is the recording project of Dylan Khotin-Foote, a Canadian electronic artist signed to Ghostly. His last record Beautiful You was widely critically acclaimed and new album Finds You Well was released last month. Reminiscent of Susumu Yokota and Boards of Canada, he creates dreamlike sounds using synth loops, samples and house beats.

Khotin on his remix:
“When choosing a song to work on I usually listen to the original in full only a single time before I begin in order to find an element that resonates with me. I found the main droning organ in ‘Badwater Psalm’ really lovely to work with. I added a little bit of movement to it with some FX and then layered a single repeating piano chord and multiple SH-101 sequences on top to create a sort of light and meandering feel to the remix.”
Elsewhere on Divergence, more details on the remaining cast of remixers:
- Lucy Gooch, an upcoming singer-songwriter based in Bristol, mixes ambient sounds with choral composition, and her debut Rushing EP was released in February.
- Maria Somerville, creates music that combines traditional Irish music, drones and dreamy post punk. The Irish composer self-released her debut All My People last year and has a monthly show on NTS radio.
- James Krivchenia is Big Thief’s drummer and recently released a solo experimental album, A New Found Relaxation.
- Nailah Hunter is an LA-based multi-instrumentalist and composer whose debut Spells is a compelling and cathartic collection of layered harp and vocals was released on Leaving Records.

Bing & Ruth is an ever-evolving ensemble steered by composer and pianist David Moore and their fourth album Species was released in early 2020. Whilst ostensibly Species is an exploration of the sonic possibilities of the Farfisa organ, aided only by a clarinet and double bass (played respectively by founding members Jeremy Viner and Jeff Ratner), it was inspired by two recent loves of Moore’s: the desert and long-distance running. Briefly relocating from his New York base to Point Dume, between the Pacific Ocean and the desert, Moore was able to indulge in both passions. Species is a study of suspended time and trance; not just a steady movement from A to B, but as something that flows, meanders and eddies, like water.
