Los Angeles singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson has unveiled ‘The Version Suicides Vol. 3’ today, the third and final EP in a recent series of cover song releases. On these EP’s Hutson takes a diverse set of songs from an unexpected set of artists and transforms them into something very personal while still keeping a playful edge.
Previous volumes included renditions of songs by Taylor Swift, Vanessa Carlton, ABBA and more. Volume 3 includes covers of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” featuring Julia Jacklin, The La’s “There She Goes” featuring Fenne Lily and Fugazi’s “I’m So Tired” featuring Al Menne of Great Grandpa. Having just completed a run of sold out shows with Orville Peck, Hutson will now look to this fall when he’ll embark on a tour with Magnetic Fields that was previously scheduled for 2020. On his 2020 album Beginners, Hutson embedded every lyric with his most intimate self-dialogue, sharing painful confessions and private jokes, imagined conversations and elaborate daydreams. The album spotlights a nuanced songcraft and understated candor that all but erases the distance between feeling and expression. Throughout this collection of songs, Hutson ultimately speaks an illuminating truth about regret and forgiveness and the endless confusion in growing up.
“I went with Beginners as the title because that’s where I feel like I am in my life—like I’m still just learning and trying to figure out how to navigate the world,” Hutson notes.
