A supremely exciting announcement for Laneway is the addition of Whitney to the bill!!
“With grinning melodies, nostalgic guitar work, and horn sections that can be triumphant and emotional, this album is already the soundtrack to some of your fondest memories of the year.”– Esquire (“The Best 25 Albums of 2016 (So Far)”)
Ahead of their forthcoming visit, Whitney have unveiled the official video for their new single, “Polly.” Tokyo-based award-winning animator and illustrator Sarina Nihei directed, animated and hand-painted the entire video over the course of two months. It focuses on vices that serve as causes for broken relationships between people and also represents the idea that no one is able to understand other people’s actual feelings.
The “Polly” video perfectly complements Whitney’s origin story. Both Julien Ehrlich Max Kakacek were going through especially painful breakups almost simultaneously when they began writing the songs that would become Light Upon The Lake. “There’s a lot of true feeling behind these songs,” says Ehrlich. “We wanted them to have a part of our personalities in them. We wanted the songs to have soul.”
With Light Upon The Lake, Whitney have created one of best albums of the year so far and are sure to end up on many forthcoming year-end lists.
“Warmth radiates off this folky, big-band rock record, which is equipped with sweet guitar strumming and vocals as fuzzy as old memories.”– NPR Music (“Songs We Love”)
“elegiac early-Seventies AM-folk bliss” – Rolling Stone (“30 Best Songs of 2016 So Far”)
