Fat Freddy’s Drop – Recorded Live In Wellington
Standing strong with music, Fat Freddy’s Drop present a one-off concert captured in their hometown of Wellington. With no audience present, it’s Freddys hitting the ground running in a studio-like jam that is deeply meaningful for these strange times.
The hometown jam is an ode to the thousands of European and UK fans that missed out on shows when the band were forced to pull the pin on their 2020 tour.
Having hurriedly returned home from Germany in March as the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the band then had to wait almost three months for their tour gear and instruments to get back to New Zealand. That moment inspired the idea of putting on a show with no audience at the Michael Fowler Centre (MFC).

It’s Freddys first performance in the iconic Wellington venue and the band treat the venue as if at home in their own BAYS studio. The live concert of eight songs spans the gamut of Freddy’s career, leaning towards songs of freedom, slower choices that would not normally be included in a typical high octane Freddys concert. A brand new track in the making makes a surprise appearance in the jams.
A multi-track music recording by Western Audio enables Freddys to stay true to their ethos of delivering the highest quality sound experience that fans have come to expect. Freddy’s beat-maker and producer, MU aka DJ Fitchie, mixed live on-stage and then took the recording back to BAYS for a final heavyweight mix. The visual capture on camera from Transmit offers a relaxed window on Freddy’s creative jam process.
When the band and their New Zealand crew that usually tour Europe with them gathered in June at the MFC, it was the first time they had been together since farewelling each other in a carpark in Hamburg. They had played one show in Frankfurt when the Covid-19 reality forced the cancellation of their two month ‘Special Edition’ album release tour. As Fitchie said, it was time to ‘pin your ears back & head for the corner’. Everyone went into self isolation on their return and then New Zealand went into Level 1 lockdown. The rest is history.
