London four piece Goat Girl today share a mesmerising new stand-alone single ‘gossip’, produced by the band and mixed by John ‘Spud’ Murphy (Lankum / Anna B Savage / black midi / caroline) in Ireland during the recording of their Below The Waste album. Embracing the electronic side of their music, the band took inspiration from Aphex Twin, Koreless, Tirzah and Gilla Band. The track is accompanied by a video, directed and edited by singer/guitarist Lottie Pendlebury.
Recently expanded to a four piece with the addition of Ruby Kyriakides (they/him) as a permanent member, Goat Girl explain how the track came about and developed its own identity compared to the other tracks recorded at the time. “We started recording gossip in Ireland with John ‘Spud’ Murphy making Below The Waste but it felt more like it’s own thing than a part of the album. We took the stems from Dublin and reworked them in London with Ruby. We wanted to lean into its electronic potential and do something quite different sonically. Lyrically, it uses natural imagery as a metaphor for contemplating hearsay and destructive behaviours.”
A film about the making of Goat Girl’s Below The Waste album was recently premiered on 8th November at the Doc N Roll Film Festival at the Century Club in Soho. The film was created by Reality Breakdown and is a collaborative documentary.
Below The Waste was co–produced by the band & John Spud Murphy (Lankum, Anna B Savage, caroline & black midi). Progressing from their angst-fueled self-titled debut (2018), to the escapist world of sophomore LP On All Fours (2021), the South London trio have entered their most self-assured era. Goat Girl’s approach to Below The Waste is confident and mature, while maintaining a playful sense of curiosity and wonder. They weave effortlessly between disparate elements of expansive noise-rock, delicate folk experimentation and satisfying synth-pop; their unique combination of styles and unorthodox recording methods a testament to a new collaborative style of production.
The record’s third single, ‘words fell out’ follows earlier tracks ‘motorway’ and ‘ride around’. ‘Motorway’ saw the band teaming up with world famous choreographer Holly Blakey, known for her work with Florence and the Machine, Harry Styles and Rosalia. The hypnotic video featured archival Vivienne Westwood pieces, styled by Matthew Josephs, known for his work with FKA Twigs.
