These heavens, my dear.

shine on their own, for the human eye glances,

in an instant you see everything in its rightful place – yet all places right in the sandbox of time.

Like you frolic in your streets, the heavens live and breathe,

thoughtless but with such precise rhythm – you could feel the pulse

And every particle observed,

every telescopic lens peered into by children in wonder,

every stone of hope you throw into the pond of stars in the night sky…

Thesis and antithesis: the universe lives for you.

These words were written by gyrofield in the early days of creating ‘These Heavens’, her new EP out on 30 August 2024. Announced today – 13 August – the four-track project will be the Hong-Kong-born, Bristol-based producer’s debut EP on XL Recordings as part of the iconic house bag series. These Heavens EP is an exploration into the universe and the beauty of nature via a series of shapeshifting sonics that are just as well-suited for personal introspection as they are for sweaty underground dancefloors. ‘Lagrange’ is the first track released today. In part inspired by the Death Stranding soundtrack, ‘Lagrange’ sees a bright vocal ricochet over long, atmospheric synths.

After having the music on rotation for the last year, gyrofield is excited to finally be releasing the EP into the world. Speaking on These Heavens, gyrofield says “I see a lot of value in creating danceable music that also touches base on atmospheric and spaced-out sounds, key use of instrumentation, and composition to provide a complement to the beats and energy of the music. I’m a big fan of a lot of Drum and Bass that has come out but the influences for this record stem just as much from electro and techno like I Hate Models, Djrum to synth ambient, post-rock, and experimental pop a la Bjork.

The four tracks that make up this EP are about the very human emotions and thoughts that drive the rigorous disciplines of science; We seek knowledge and to understand the stars and universe above us, even though they operate lifelessly, and on such a vast scale. We put our love and dreams into understanding the heavens, hoping that one day we can be amongst them.”

gyrofield is fast becoming electronic music’s most exciting new Drum & Bass talent. Their arrival on the scene was an anomaly. Aged 9, they discovered electronic music via the internet, stumbling across the sounds of Skrillex (Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites) and Noisia (Split The Atom) on YouTube. The otherworldly sounds intrigued gyrofield and so began their self-made journey in music. It was only after visiting Bristol at 17 that gyrofield stepped foot into a club for the first time at Unchained Recordings’ takeover of The Love Inn. This experience was transformative and ignited a new ambition in her. In four short years since then, gyrofield has gone from DIY DJ/producer to a NTS resident with releases ranging from Drum & Bass to Jungle to Ambient Techno to Dubstep via Metalheadz, Critical, Deadbeats, and Noisia’s VISION, to name a few. They have amassed a growing committed fanbase that includes Tim Reaper, DJ Flight, Doc Scott, IMANU and Joy Orbison, who invited gyrofield to close the January edition of his free London club-night series ‘Just For You’. Continuing to build on these successes, gyrofield prepares to play their biggest-ever shows this Autumn including a debut Warehouse Project show and an appearance at Overmono’s Pure Devotion takeover of The Prospect Building.
