Watch the new Jamila Woods video for ‘EARTHA’, a song inspired by singer, actress, activist, author, and songwriter Eartha Kitt. The video, directed by Fatimah Asghar (Jamila’s best friend/poet/Brown Girls series creator) and executive produced by Vincent Martell of VAM STUDIO features Indya Moore of the FX show Pose, Langston Kerman of HBO’s Insecure along with spoken word artist Safia Elhillo.
On the inspiration for the video Asghar explains:
“Jamila’s song EARTHA pays homage to Eartha Kitt’s defiant spirit, and her refusal to compromise in a world that is always trying to constrict women and femmes. In the production, we wanted to reference iconic images of Eartha Kitt and embody her energy to create a celebration of unapologetic femininity and sisterhood, as well as play on and challenge the ways that women have been historically portrayed in cinema by going for an old-school film vibe. As Eartha taught us, being feminine isn’t just one thing– it’s an incredible range. That energy permeates the video.”
The song comes from Jamila’s recently announced LEGACY! LEGACY! LP that features Saba, Nico Segal, theMIND, Jasminfire, and Nitty Scott available May 10th via Jagjaguwar in partnership with Closed Sessions.
