Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock
Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock met in Lubbock, Texas when they were both 12 and they have been friends and frequent musical collaborators ever since. Along with Joe Ely, they formed The Flatlanders in 1972 and recorded an album in Nashville that proved to be ahead of its time. When the record was finally released a decade later, it received significant critical acclaim and The Flatlanders are now considered fathers of the alt-country movement.
Gilmore’s music eludes categorization, blending elements of folk, rock, country, blues and bluegrass. Gilmore’s inimitable voice evokes the high-lonesome sound of the West Texas plains. As Nicholas Davidoff (New York Times Magazine) once said, “[Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s] voice would make even Hank Williams cry.” Gilmore has recorded seven solo albums including three receiving Grammy nominations: Spinning around the Sun (Elektra 1993), Braver Newer World (Elektra, 1996), and Come On Back (Rounder, 2005), and numerous other collaborative albums with the Flatlanders, Butch Hancock and the Wronglers. His most recent release was a critically acclaimed collaboration with Dave Alvin, Downey to Lubbock (YepRoc, 2018). Gilmore is also known for his role as Smokey in the cult-classic, The Big Lebowski.
Hancock has been called “one of the finest songwriters of our time” and is acknowledged by his peers and critics alike as one of the premiere singer-songwriters Texas has ever produced. He sings of mystical visions and wind-swept dry plains. His lyrics are profoundly imaginative, revealing the miracles of ordinary life. After moving to the progressive country hotbed of Austin in the mid-70s, Hancock started his own label (Rainlight) and released the quintessential West Texas Waltzes and Dust Blown Tractor Tunes in 1978. Since then he has recorded 10 solo albums and his songs have been covered by Emmy Lou Harris and others. A multifaceted artist, Hancock has also received critical acclaim for his photographs and ballpoint pen drawings. Award-winning artist and songwriter Terry Allen says of Hancock, “He’s made his life completely about the making of amazing things … photographs, film, video, outlandish architectural propositions, elaborate ballpoint drawings, handmade journals filled with writings, sketches and scrawls … and always, the songs.”
In 1990, Gilmore and Hancock toured New Zealand and Australia and the result was a live album called Two Roads. on Virgin Records. This will be their first appearance together in New Zealand since then.
