“Electrifying, downtempo house” – Shortlist
“Contemplative, soulful, and more significant” – Loud and Quiet
“Euphoric melancholy…impressive” – NME
With his sophomore record “Trick”, Kele further extends his musical palette into the world of British dance, coming up with a record that is as effortlessly assured and confident as it is deliciously infectious. Far from wishing to rest on his laurels, “Trick” is the sound of an artist preferring to follow his own instincts and take risks instead.
Following on from the previous single “Doubt”, the emotive “Closer” is but another example of the shimmering gems that are on offer here. It’s a gorgeous, brokenhearted track which features Jodie Scantlebury on vocals, lending proceedings a wistful, emotive air, particularly during the stirring chorus. It is, in short, absolutely stunning, and one that will continue to linger in the mind long after it’s over.
To accompany the release of the single, Kele also unveils the stunning video for “Closer”. Playing on Kele’s electric stage show which consists of a 60 minute live visual that is sound reactive to music, the video utilizes these extraordinary visuals, filmed in unique locations around South London and with simple but effective mapping of space, featuring Kele and guest vocalist Jodie Scantlebury against stark, geometric and concrete backdrops.
The LP “Trick” is out now on Lilac Recordings (via Kobalt Label Services)
