“I keep waiting to not like that, but it never happens. It comes close but it doesn’t happen. I liked it, I enjoyed it. I lived through the original psychedelic era and made it out the other side and this has some of the same notes on it. It’s got a flute, but, it’s a little bit different. I notice that because it’s kids of today that are not afraid to give the drum a good whack behind it or give the bass a good thump.
The backing tracks on the original psychedelia used to pretend to either be ponderers or kind of fay, but, these people just bonk on in there and it’s a pretty well crafted melody I reckon. Maybe like love, but, not as advanced, still I want to hear them one more time, this is ‘Sense’ by King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.”
– Iggy Pop on his 6Music show
Recorded in Brooklyn’s Daptone Studios, work on the album began in 2014 around the release of the band’s acclaimed album, I’m In Your Mind Fuzz. Ever-prolific, it took King Gizzard two years and two additional albums to fine-tune the concept and music that would become Nonagon Infinity. In that time the group has zigzagged between 1960s beach-pop, stripped down acoustic psych, and densely packed prog, while always keeping the seeds of Nonagon Infinity fertile.
This high-octane, face-melting nine-song collection has been ingeniously crafted as the world’s first infinitely looping LP, with each track seamlessly flowing into the next, and the final song linking straight back into the top of the opener.
This all makes Nonagon Infinity an intricate, astonishing culmination. “We really wanted to focus on things that felt good live,” explains frontman Stu Mackenzie. “We’d grab a little riff here or a little groove there, and we’d jam on them and form songs. I wanted to have an album where all these riffs and grooves just kept coming in and out the whole time, so a song wasn’t just a song, it was part of a loop, part of this whole experience where it feels like it doesn’t end and doesn’t need to end.”
Rolling Stone declared them “one of the most compelling collectives of art-rock experimentalists in recent years.”
