The video for Merchandise‘s new single ‘Enemy’, taken from the band’s forthcoming 4AD debut After The End, has just been premiered by Pitchfork.
Taking inspiration from American greats Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger and William Eggleston, filmmaker Timothy Saccenti (Depeche Mode, Flying Lotus, Battles, Animal Collective) said the goal was to transform “the thick southern tones and ripe textures of deep Florida into a dream-state visual backdrop for the song.”??You can watch it below..
‘Enemy’ is the second track to be aired from Merchandise’s new album, due for release in NZ on August 22nd. Self-recorded and produced over a six month period in the house they share in Tampa, After The End is a real success, showing what bands can achieve themselves.
As the album’s title suggests, Merchandise are still evolving. With this record, they’ve expanded ranks with Carson Cox (vocals / guitar), David Vassalotti (guitar) and Patrick Brady (bass), now being joined by Chris Horn (guitar / keys / sax) and Elsner Nino (drums).
Speaking to the NME earlier this year, Carson said “(Our last album) Totale Nite was the end of the book. This is a whole new one. It’s like we can start a new band with basically the same name. We’ve already exploded our reality – now we’re going to re-make ourselves as a pop band, but it’ll still be a twisted reality.” He’s kept to his word, the album is made up of ten tracks spread across a mean 45 minutes.
After The End will be out 22 August via 4AD/Rhythmethod
