EDWARD SHARPE
& THE MAGNETIC ZEROS
On the back of M.I.A’s brand new release the US top 10 album /\/\ /\ Y /\
(featuring the songs XXXO, Born Free and It Takes A Muscle ) M.I.A arrives in New Zealand for the first time with power. Inciting conversation and demanding attention, M.I.A is “ambitious, contradictory, unrepentant, unafraid to charge in head first and worry about the consequences later” (The Vine). Her new material has attracted an abundance of attention and provoked overwhelming opinion with new album /\/\ /\ Y /\, which has been described as “a towering work that makes a mockery of rivals and genres” (Clash Magazine).

M.I.A is an outstanding performer in an echelon all of her own. She is an artist not to be missed, so make sure you catch M.I.A in 2011 as she plays at the Big Day Out.

Joining M.I.A will be fellow label mates and regular visitors to our shores Ratatat. New York duo Mike Stroud and Evan Mast have been mixing electronics with guitars for the past decade, combining the power of noise and dance. RATATAT have collaborated with Kid Cudi, remixed Bjork, dropped four albums. On the back of their latest release LP4, the duo will be making a return visit to NZ in 2011 for the  Big Day Out festival. While songs like Lex, Wild Cats and Seventeen Years have made them completely hip,  it’s when you see RATATAT live on stage – an aural, visual and physical assault of synths, guitar, hypnotic video and boundless energy – that you understand this is a rock act of massive proportions!

And fresh from the Rough Trade Records stable, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros will be in NZ for their first visit. They have recently released their 13-song debut album, Up From Below which is a rousing, anthemic, wildly adventurous and inspired offering. Drenched in an almost choral psychedelic folk rock, it was recorded onto used 2 track tape using a 24 track tape machine made in 1979.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are not your usual group, that’s for sure. The band started playing shows together about two years ago, they are fronted by Alex Ebert, who becomes his childhood alter ego Edward Sharpe whenever the group performs. They tour in a converted school bus, complete with band name painted along the side (looking for all the world like the Merry Pranksters). Whether the bus makes it to NZ is yet to be decided but the at least ten members will be bringing all of the kum-by-ya needed to balance out the hard metal acts of the day! Check ’em out…
