Today (9th March), Overmono release a new single ‘Gunk’. Set to build on the success of their acclaimed 2021 releases ‘BMW Track / So U Kno’, ‘Diamond Cut / Bby’ and ‘Pieces Of 8 / Echo Rush’, ‘Gunk’ raises the bar yet again. Premiered at their spectacular, sold-out headline show at London’s historic York Hall last month, it’s a future-facing, contemporary celebration of sound system culture that’s set to electrify club and festival dancefloors throughout the year.

Gunk’ is the first track to be released from a new Overmono EP. The five-track ‘Cash Romantic’ EP will be released digitally on 8th April via XL Recordings, with the 12” vinyl to follow in the coming months. The EP marks a new phase in the duo’s evolution; one that sees them introducing a broader spectrum to their deft compositions to take their unique sound beyond the dancefloor.

Speaking on the forthcoming EP, Overmono said –

“We found this box of old tapes we’d recorded when we were kids where we’d basically try and mashup old records of our parents with whatever records we were buying at the time. Gerry Rafferty mixed with London acid techno, Dr. Hook mixed with old weirdo trance tracks, and that sort of thing. The tapes are a proper mess but there was always something about trying to get two totally different worlds to collide that stuck with us. After listening to some of these old tapes, we wrote this record and realised our heads are still pretty much in the same space as when we were kids”

2021 was Overmono’s breakthrough year. The duo exploded across the live music circuit, picking up ‘Best Live Act’ at the prestigious DJ Mag Best of British Awards, after performing to packed-out audiences at the most credible venues and festivals including The Warehouse Project, We Out Here and Green Man. Their summer anthem ‘So U Kno’ reignited club and festival dancefloors post-pandemic and went on to be named ‘Track of the Year’ by Resident Advisor, Time Out, Dummy, and Beatportal. Meanwhile, they produced three critically acclaimed EPs, a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and a compilation mix for iconic London institution Fabric, which is hailed as one of the best-ever released since the series inception in 2019.

Overmono are fast becoming the duo to define the UK club sound of this era. With major headline shows already under their belt, a series of esteemed festival performances ahead, and an exciting new addition to their revered catalogue, it’s something that’s set to continue in 2022 and beyond.

Recent praise of Overmono:

“The Russell brothers provided some of the most memorable dance music tracks of the year that we will forever be associated with this period in history.” – THE QUIETUS

“After releasing a 10/10 edition of the ‘Fabric presents’ mix album series, they soundtracked our collective return to the dancefloor with two indisputable anthems (Bby and So U Kno) that cemented their status as UK dance royalty. Long may their reign continue.” MUSIC RADAR

“An Overmono set is like mainlining serotonin. The duo’s brand of direct, body-moving breaks and hands-to-the-sky build-ups was tailor-made for the triumphant return, and after more than a year when the communal experience of music felt like a distant memory, the immediacy of their sets meant theirs was a name on everybody’s lips.” DJ MAG

“They’ve signed to XL, collaborated with Joy Orbison, remixed Thom Yorke, appeared in GTA, and generally seem to be the UK techno group of the moment. Their fabric Presents mix, then, comes at an auspicious moment where they seem poised to approach chart-threatening, Bicep-style territory.” – RESIDENT ADVISOR

“So U Kno, the Overmono track that opens the mix, is particularly excellent: an iron-clad 2-step battleship with an irresistible hook, the steel of techno colliding against the rubbery skitter of UKG.”PITCHFORK
