PAVEMENT share video trailer of new film Pavements

An examination of the seminal band, Pavements appears to be just another music documentary, until it doesn’t. A prismatic, narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, metatextual hybrid, the film directed by Alex Ross Perry and produced/edited by Robert Greene intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by their saga as the most important band of a generation. The film previously premiered at Venice Film Festival and New York Film Festival to rave reviews.

Utopia’s unorthodox film Pavements officially opened in NYC May 2 at Film Forum and LA May 9 at NuArt, with special screenings happening at BAM in Brooklyn this weekend.

On May 30th, Matador will release the Pavements soundtrack album digitally with a physical edition to follow at a later date. Compiled by Pavements producer/editor Robert Greene and Pavement, the soundtrack ropes together disparate elements from the film – dialogue snippets, scenes from the fake Oscar-bait biopic Range Life, and cast recordings from the Slanted! Enchanted! jukebox musical as well as live and rehearsal tapes from the band’s 2022 reunion tour. The soundtrack features the original lineup as well as Rebecca Cole on keyboards and backing vocals on the live recordings from the 2020s.

Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. Among the most beloved acts to come out of the American underground in the 1990’s, the band released five era-defining albums – Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Pavement’s 2022 reunion saw them headline Primavera Sound and perform sold-out multi-night runs in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

Select critical praise for Pavements:

“Brilliantly done…delightfully destabilizing” – The New York Times

“Dazzling…An artificial artifact that nonetheless proves more authentic” – The New Yorker

“Perfectly cracked…exactly the type of WTF rock doc the band deserves” – Rolling Stone

“Perfectly imperfect…it slips pleasingly through your grasp” – Los Angeles Times

“A Möbius strip of a music documentary, at once ardent in its affections and devilishly ironic in how it treats the norms of paying tribute” – Wall Street Journal

“A reminder that the fourth (and fifth and sixth) wall can be smashed, that the rock doc can be reinvented” – IndieWire

“The maverick approach leaves the viewer constantly wondering what’s real and what isn’t, while capturing the spirit of the band more effectively than a more easily digestible approach could” – AV Club

“Shaggy and impossible-to-categorize” – Stereogum

“Ambitious…an innovative portrayal” – Slant
